ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Sep 25, 2007 Draught pint at the brewpub on 9/3/07 Nitrogenated, cascading tan head atop a dark brown/black body. Medium-low clarity, strong retention/lacing. Beautiful chocolate sweetness is not overdone, falling back in to tar and molasses dryness that is further enhanced by light coffee. Surprisingly strong aroma for a nitrogenated beer and without any limpid/stale dark malt notes. No flaws or alcohol noted. Soft, sweet vanilla and cream malt flavors add light body and substance up front, only to give way to an immensely pleasurable saltiness that combines oily roast, dark baker’s chocolate and hints of bitter, burnt grain. A slight reprise of sweetness on the finish, with low wateriness, especially for the style (in which it is appropriate). No alcohol or flaws. Incredibly drinkable and flavorful. CharlesDarwin (1333), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2006 On tap at the brewpub. Pitch black, with a tarnish bronze head. Light salted roast coffe aroma with hazlenut cream. Sweet molasses, caramalized sugars and candied pears. Light and smooth overall, with a high drinkabilith, while maintaining decent character. Tops off with a hint of bourbon chocolate. Lighter body, lends drinkability, but distracts from the characters. More alcohol would have carried flavors better, but made it more of a sipper. The perfect oyster accompianment.
