Solid black stout, small tan head with minimal retention, nice chocolate coffee aroma, pleasantly smooth feel on the palate, bittersweet taste. Pretty solid all around, but doesn’t much stand out from the crowd. There’s a faint but attractive bit of cherry or berry on the finish.

pours a great dark brown to black color. it doesn’t really compare to guiness as the flavors are sweeter and softer. the only thing i’ll say against it is that it has a somewhat weak palate for such a dark beer. the flavors are great, there are some chocolate flavors and lots of coffee. really great beer for a brewery/restaurant.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2010 Pretty good. Tastes and smells strongly of coffee. Some stouts have more chocolate in them but I’d say this one is mainly that of coffee. Definitely thick and black as night. Some might bash me for this but when there was just a little bit left in the bottle I mixed it with some coffee creamer and to my surprise it tasted like real coffee with an alcoholic finish. Not bad at all!

Oggi’s off 8 in San Dawg. The best, i thought, of the sampler tray. Reminds me of guin, just a little more flat in the beginning. Wonderful roasted coffee smell. Sweet long lasting finish. Very smooth from start to finish.

Pours a deep dense black with tons of head. Lace is plentiful on my glass. Smells rich of burnt choclate, coffee, dark roasted malts. Flavor opens bitter and acidic, I can almost feel the enamel peeling away from my teeth. Well hopped is this stout. Burnt molases, dark chocolate, espresso and sweet brown sugar hit the taste buds. Mouthfeel is medium and very clean, finishes with a light chocolate syrup and moderate coating on the throat. This is one of the finest examples of the style that I have encountered, extremely drinkable.

Draft @ Oggis Carmel Mountain. black with tan head, creamy, smokey, strong malt aroma and flavour. coffee aftertaste very smooth.

not a big stout drinker, but this one is not bad. strong flavors of chocolate and coffee....maybe a little too sweet.

Draft at Escondido, CA, Oggi’s. Flavor on the subtle side, and went well with the burger. Wish I could get this bottled!

22 oz. bottle. Pours black with thin dark brown head. Creamy aroma. Slightly bitter chocolate and nut flavor. Not a bad stout.

I had this at the Oggis in Mission Viejo. My friend and I shared a pitcher of this beer over some pizza.
I was impressed with this medium bodied stout. It can't compete with the higher quality micro stouts; however, for a pizza brewpub it was definitely a good beer.
The pour was dark in color with a brownish head. The aroma has a mild roasted malt smell. I could definitely taste the roasted malt flavor with hints of chocolate and coffee.
This dry stout was easy to drink and enjoyable with our pizza. If you find yourself at an Oggis, try the Black Magic Stout. Or better yet, try their sampler, so you can find your favorite.
