Bottle. It pours a clear, dark amber colored body under a minimal-sized beige head. The aroma is roasted with some peated hints, not peated malts though, more like dry peat. Some hints of dark chocolate and raisins. It’s full-bodied and soft on the palate, dryish. Roasted malts, damp forest and raisins in the flavor. Lasting bitter finish with something reminiscent of alcohol, which I doubt it is. 140829

Dark brown coloured body with a nice three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, raisins, wort, grain, a touch of light hops and some stronger caramel. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty and earthy malt flavour with some light caramel sweetness and a surprising amount of vanilla and dry oak notes in the mix. Aftertaste shows some subdued earthy malt with a good grain character, hints of scotch and whiskey and even a glimpse of cherries in the finish. Overall, a good beer - i’m not much of a Scotch Ale drinker, but this was remarkably balanced and nuanced for the style - a good one to try if you like the style and can find this! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased a few hours ago at New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 19-July-2014 for US$2.95, yes a full bomber on the other end of the country in a theoretically expensive city for under US$3!!! Sampled in my hotel room here on the LES of New York on 19-July-2014.

Cask No head to speak of, chestnut brown, clear beer. Softly roasted malts, maltsyrup. Sharp roastiness in the mouth, bit like heavy meat roast; light bitterness but not hoppy. Sharpish MF, medium bodied at least. Not bad, less sweet than expected.

Poured from a draft into a pint glass at Oggi’s in Santee, Calif. About a finger of head. Color was brownish red. Hardly any white lacing on the top. Minimal film on the sides. Smelled dark chocolate and coffee malts mainly. Also caramel, toffee and some toasty notes. Tasted fairly close to the nose. Got coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee and toast. Also tasted a little rum, maybe Captain Morgan’s. Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Smooth finish but still got that Captain Morgan taste. An OK beer overall. Pretty much what I expected. I’d probably try it again.
