   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 6/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 12/20
FlacoAlto (3800) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - FEB 21, 2010
Sampled at 1702, Tucson December 2009
This arrives from the tap with a clear, rich gold, even touch of copper, color to it. It is topped by a pale, thin, wispy head. The aroma smells of phenolics, clove, spicy pepper and alcohol up front. There are some apple and pear like notes as well as a characteristic yeast aroma of earthy coriander. This smells like a fruity, estery, Strong Belgian Gold styled beer. In the end the aroma is overwhelmed by the aggressive, fermentation derived phenolics, though I would actually characterize it as bad.

The flavor is sweet up front and it finishes with a spicy, somewhat hot alcoholic, bit of tongue numbing turpene like, pheonolc-clove character. There are some floral apple notes found hear as well as something like oxidized pears (though this is the beer and not actual oxidation), a touch of honey’d wheat flavors, light ginger notes, a hint of pepper and even something that reminds me of cinnamon. The sweetness here definitely helps to temper the aggressive phenolics. The body has a medium viscosity to it, though the beer does still remain fairly quaffable, but it has some heft to it.

This beer is ok and while not horrible, it seems like the wort was fermented at a bit too high of a fermentation temperature that created the excess of phenols, esters and higher alcohols.

cbkschubert (2900) - BFE, Arizona, USA - JAN 9, 2010
On tap @ 1702 - Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. Lively carbonation. Thick lacing. Aroma and flavor is sweet malt and fruity esters. The esters linger on the palate. Medium body. A nice beer.

Draught at the brewpub, Scottsdale, AZ
Hazy deep blond color. Sweet malt aroma, lightly fruity and flowery. Sweetish flavor, some malt, dirty water, citrus fruits, peach. Strong bitterness for the style. Drinkable, but something’s wrong..

Sparky (2243) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - MAR 1, 2009
On tap at the AZ Strong Beer fest. Pours a hazy gold with a small off-white head. The nose is floral hops, spicd and vegetable juice? The taste is malt, light citrus hop and V8 juice. Medium bodied. Interesting beer.

Bockyhorsey (2610) - Mesa, Arizona, USA - JAN 4, 2009
Tap @ Scottsdale location. Served with an orange slice to add some fruit to brew server said. At least he knew what a Belgian ale was., that was good. Still aroma starchy spicey and yeast bread. Golden body with white head. Took a drink with out the orange and this was starchy pepper spice. Bit into orange slice and that made experience little better but spice and pepper dominated the ale. Rather smooth for a strong ale on the palate. Alright beer.

BOLTZ7555 (2799) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - OCT 22, 2008
On tap @ Oggi’s Glendale, AZ. This one pours 24 karat gold with subtle fiery orange glow about it. 1/4 inch eggshell head left minimal lacing around the inside of the glass. The beer started with a hop wallop; pine, grapefruit, and even a little honey sweetness. As it warms, I get qualities of a hefeweizen...with wheat, clove, and banana coming forward. Very interesting and glad I had a chance to try this beer.

On tap at Oggis. Hazy golden with fizzy white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma. Tastes of orange, pineapple, cloves, spice, honey, and a dry finish with some alcoholic warmth.

Naven (1000) - Poway, California, USA - APR 21, 2007
On tap @ Oggis Mission Valley. Golden color, came served in a pint glass. Smelled like a hoppy lager. Flavor had some banana qualities in it, with lots of Euro hops (Im thinking they were saaz hops). Brutally bitter finish. Tasted like Malt liquor. Not my thing. Even good breweries can brew bad beers.

marcus (6489) - Sacramento, California, USA - OCT 8, 2006
On tap at Oggi’s Temecula. This golden ale poured with a thin off-white head. The flavor is malty sweet, with some fruit and spice characteristics, and a more bitter finish. This is a pretty decent beer.
