john_adam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA Mar 27, 2008 Poured black with a creamy brown head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Smell became more dominant as it warmed. Great chocolate and coffee swirl flavors. Strong coffee finish. Beautiful. Big thanks to therealbastard for sharing!
BlackForestCO (549), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA Aug 31, 2008 Bottle shared by TAR, thanks man. Poured a thick black color with a deep tan head that receded to a ring. Aroma of chocolate malt, caramel, light smoke, some light toffee, and undertones of dark fruit. Smooth chocolate malt with some caramel and undertones of dark fruits, namely plum and fig, transitioned into a roasty, smoky finish with some light coffee. Smooth and full on the palate, low carbonation. RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Aug 6, 2008 750ml bottle. ’05 bottle. Thanks to miketd for sharing. Aroma: Roasted malt with notes of coffee, cigar smoke, and chocolate. Significant oxidation. Toffee, plums and figs, anise. Appearance: Black in color and opaque. No head or lacing. Flavor: Big note of coffee, smoke, chocolate, molasses, grape jelly and prunes. Finishes medium sweet with a lingering taste of coffee and brown sugar. Palate: Full bodied. Low carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall: I never expected to try this beer, so it was a treat to do so. There was some oxidation here, but overall this beer has held up well. Very good and was probably even better when it was fresh. Retorp (2155), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 19, 2008 I
d waited a long time to try this and traded a very prized beer for it, so I had fairly high expectations. I wasn’t exactly let down, but it didn’t exactly live up to my expectations either. The aroma is full of dark fruits, rich dark and roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. More of the same for the flavor though it is a bit less intense than I’d hoped. Still a very good beer. Ibrew2or3 (1756), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jun 2, 2008 Huge thanks to CigarCityBrew for opening this rare elixir. Pours deep dark darkness with brown head. The aroma has some dark roasty malts, dark grapes, ripe plums and blueberries. It also gets a bit toasty and almost biscuit like. Inviting aroma. The taste starts sweet with smooth and nearly velvety mouthfeel. I get roasty and rich maltiness, burnt malts, dark chocolate and tasty sweet dark fruity esters of dark grape jam, sweet raisins and blueberries. The age has done this beer well with a smooth blended flavor sensation. fishingnet (861), Brandon, Florida, USA May 25, 2008 Bottle courtesy Degarth. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and dark fruit. taste is the same as aroma with a hint of sweet caramel. Medium full mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. Very good.
