mcberko (9205) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 1, 2015
2010 vintage. 250mL bottle, courtesy of fiulijn (thanks a lot, Alex), pours a murky dark rusted mahogany - no head. Nose brings out rich dark fruits, sherry oxidation, brown sugar and some alcohol. Flavour is rich and complex, with dark dried fruits, caramel, liqueur, and just a touch of booze. The alcohol is really well-worked in for being this high. Zero carbonation - totally flat, but it works. Smooth palate. Luxurious.

Marduk (3830) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - APR 22, 2015
250ml bottle 2010 vintage (thanks FatPhil). Clear copper color. Tiny size to almost no head. Sweet, raisins, woody, caramel, fruity aroma. Soaken wet fruits, plums, soapy, salty liquorice, oily taste. Oily slick mouthfeel. Salty licorice in aftertaste. Alcohol is there. As it warms up itís pure licorice. Soft bitterness.

250ml bottle (Bacchanalia, Cambridge)
Gentle prune aroma, a heavy barley presence too, though. Deep reddy brown, flat. Slick palate, carbonation next to none-existent. I have no idea how or why, but an image of a fish has just appeared in my mind. It might be the oiliness of th palate, it might be the slight saltiness. Something soapy there too. I do get some alcohol too up the back of the nose. A little heavy, some liquoricey bitterness from the dark roasted malts and the salt. Doesnít have the yumminess I like from a barley wine, I am disappointed. The ~#10000 Barley Wine binge comes to an end.

Garrold (2496) - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - OCT 10, 2014
Bottle. Mitchellís Wines, Sheffield. Clear, dark amber. Halo of white. Sweet, treacle woodiness. Some vegetable water. Taste is heavy sweet. Not unlike a fortified wine. Relief by way of a light, vinous dryness. Palate is as chewy and thick as it gets. Loads of booze. Blimey, this is tasty gear. Getting some overripe pear juice now. This beer is all in the taste, and on the palate. Slick, boozy, chewy barley wine, that took me by surprise with its downright bigness. The tastiest £2.50 Iíve ever spent! Which is probably a bit of a bargain...
