HogcliffeLenny (162), Christchurch, Dorset, England Jan 27, 2008 Bottle 500ml. Pours a good dark stout colour with a medium beige head, which seemed disappear in no time. Has a sweet aroma, reminiscent of sweet dark fruits, but nothing special. The taste, however, is completely different. The flavour starts, rather oddly, with hints of cod liver oil - what’s that all about? It then settles down to something resembling dark roast coffee beans, with a backup sweetness. It then leaves you with a dry bitterness to finish. This one was quite thin, not at all what I had expected and not, as it says on the bottle, “superbly smooth”. Thumbs down for this one. evilsoc (191), Wales Jan 26, 2008 Really think I’ve had a bad batch. Pours oily brown with no head. Aroma slightly sweet chocolate. Very thin on the palate with a mild chocolate, bread body with port evident. I expected a much richer flavour. RSRIZZO (1345), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jan 20, 2008 Aroma is mild and roasted with a odd sweetness. Color is black with good carbonation and a huge head that keeps growing. Taste is twangy. Starting with a medium body that goes down sharp. Finish is a sweet taste that turns sour quickly, this sour taste is odd and has a wine like quality to it. It ends bitter with a dry feel. Reminds me of a novices homebrew. Not a good Stout. sm89walt (434), Norwich, Norfolk, England Jan 19, 2008 Bottle. This pours a brown so dark it almost appears black, but not quite. The head on this is a rather fine, beige colour that quickly disperses. Aromas of smoked/roasted malts and a hint of liquorice-like sweetness. A nicely dry, roasted flavour compliments the aromas and the port is subtle yet noticeable on the front of the tongue. Very smooth and fairly thick on the palate with a lasting dry bitter finish. A rather impressive stout. chimplechamp (463), Oslo, Norway Jan 7, 2008 bottle the cave- pours nearly black with a beige head that has dispersed quite fast. strong malty taste, burnt toast very rich. thick like a milk shake. also lots of bitter chocolate. smells burnt toast and chocolate. with accents of cherries. pretty good. gmonroe10 (172), Netherlands Jan 6, 2008 Super smooth and very little roasted taste or bitterness- almost not even a beer! Very enjoyable, but lack of complexity Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Jan 1, 2008 Dark brown with a red hue. The aroma has notes of coffee and licorice. It’s a nice stout with a lot of flavour and personality. It has bite and yet it’s smooth and mellow, and the finish is nice and dry. I’m not sure I can find the port wine, but I do get notes of licorice, smoke and briefly also bitter chocolate. pivnizub (4951), Bochum, Porúří, Germany Dec 29, 2007 Bottle: Very deep ruby-amber coloured, mid-sized, stable creamy tanned head, dry roasted malt, dark malt and a subtle fruitiness in the nose; solid dry bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; dry, light bitter, roastmalty and coffeeish finish. A goody, well balanced.......
