frankenkitty (1900), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Feb 22, 2007 Pours a deep garnet body with a huge, tan head that settles slow and leaves some wet lace on its way down. Muddy yeasts late. Port is apparent in the aroma and complements a base of dark, roasty malts. Tones of metallica, alcohol and some just-blown-out birthday cake candles. Flavor finds a thin stout as a rather weak base for raisins and wine. Smooth drinking, the palate is creamy with a hint of stickiness. Its good points outweigh its bad ones.

andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Feb 17, 2007 16.9oz bottle. midnight ruby pour with a minimal and quickly receding beige head. that being said, there are sweet aromas of grape, sugar, and black cherries; also a deeply masked strawberry aroma is present, though rapidly fading. i’ve had ports, and i’ve had my share of stouts. this factoring into my opinions, i think this a hoppy stout. the mouthfeel gives way to a spicy and tangy flavor. the finish is adequate, but not exactly overflowing with character. it’s a stout, but not impressive to my palate. SledgeJr (2957), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Feb 3, 2007 At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. This was called "Ruby Stout" when I had it. This is clearly a dry stout, so the addition of port is pretty cool for a finished product. Pours dark reddish brown in color with an off-white head. The port dominates the aroma- cherries and wine. Flavor is a blend of chocolate and wine with a mild roasted stout dryness at the finish. Body is not thick, but it still satisfies. Marsiblursi (1631), Göteborg, Sweden Jan 31, 2007 (Bottle) Pours deep dark brown with red hints. Light roasted aroma with notes of sweet chocolate and some coffee. Just a touch of hops. Some light wineous tones of berries in both the nose and the taste. Roasted flavour with, chocolate, coffee and smoke. Medium bitter and dry finish. Pretty light body. moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Jan 30, 2007 Definite vinuous aroma that has some cherries detectable. Almost black in appearance with a nice brown head. The taste is strongly vinuous with light yeast flavors and some lightly roasted malts. Interesting brew. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Jan 30, 2007 Some chocolate and some slight alcohol in the aroma.Pours a dark brown with some red hues.Medium tan head.Chocolate, smoaked malt and alcohol in the flavors.Thin to medium mouthfeel with some smoaked malt in the finish. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Jan 30, 2007 Cask Jet-black beer with a B.C."H.". Slight-sweet, some typical porter-roasted notes, but especially a fry or a roast piece of meat... Ink-like, but sweet taste, with a slight moccha-like finish. Warming up, some fruity-estery noes. Medium bodied, quite slick. Must have been a very Scottish dash of Portwine. mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 28, 2007 Bottle. Surprisingly light in colour for a stout- ruby dark brown with a small white head. The aroma is mostly toffee malt and toasty caramel along with some nuttiness. Some roast coffee bitterness, sour malt, and nutty bread. Almost like a dunkel of sorts.
Tasted at Smokeless Joe in Toronto on January 19, 2007.
