Mungo (2474), Southampton, Hampshire, England Nov 30, 2005 Cask conditioned @ Giddy Bridge (JDW), Soton. Opaque black with deep red highlights. Charred roast with earthy hop aromas. Well balanced if slightly thin with a soft spicy fruit finish which may or may not be attributable to the port. blankboy (3157), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 27, 2005 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry and Dave B. -- courtesy of Dave B. Pours a dark ruby-brown with a large creamy light-brown head. Very mild aroma of smoke, roasted malt and port. Flavour’s also very mild and follows the aroma -- it’s also a tad harsh and not very tasty. Mediocre at best. Siroy (220), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 26, 2005 [500ml bottle, 10c, exp:15/03/06]
Taste with the guys from Institut de la Bière.
Pours a rich brown/black. Mild roasted barley malt. Sherry nose. I’d say it’s in-between a porter and a stout, closer to porter, therefore the name.
A boring stout, but a ok porter. Alcohol hits at first followed by a rich tawny taste but be ready for a abrupt metallic/hop finish.
HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Nov 24, 2005 Bottle (500ml). Shared with blankboy and Dave B - courtesy of Dave B. Poured deep reddish-brown with a huge light brown head. Dry roast malt, roasted nuts, hops, a little licorice and prunes, touch of grain and cream, very smoky on warming. Taste is pretty light, the port is there but muted - tastes smoky and roast malt, very bitter, port balances it nicely. Mouthfeel is slightly watery for a stout, almost salty. Nice aroma, pitiful taste. Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands Nov 10, 2005 the most bitter stout i’ve ever tasted! almost black with a biege. aroma: little malty and a bit grassy. taste: bitter, sourrish, licorice, coffee, mocca, bit burnt malt and grassy as well. finishes bitter with lots of licorice. different stout, bit on the harsh side, but nice enough. Magicdave6 (5383), London, Greater London, England Nov 3, 2005 Beers of europe. I really didnt know what to expect here, i had visions of a sweet stout with good bitterness too, however its well mmmm. Aroma is grassy hops with black coffee, and dryness. Taste is a sort of coffee chocolate, with a very long dry finish, your mouth is actually fully dryed out. I assume this is dur to the port, but there isnt much in the way of fruitiness which i wanted. Not bad all the same and if they do this on cask id imagine its quite good. Dough77 (771), Aurora, Illinois, USA Nov 2, 2005 This one had some age on it, and I didnt expect that to really damage it too bad, but it seemed like it may have. I tried to rate accordingly. Pours out an easy black medium head. Aroma of port wine, malt, chocolate, licorice as well. Flavor was a strange bitter, maybe the port, kind of sweet and sour, the latter unexpected. Even during its prime, I cant imagine this beer being much better than a high 2. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Oct 28, 2005 Pours a black color with ruby highlights and a thick, frothy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and port wine. Flavor of mild roasted malt with chocolate and port wine with a bitter finish. Medium body with a dry and creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
