rgrep (150), Wellington, New Zealand Apr 25, 2005 Deep black-purple with a rocky brown head. Toasty malt aroma with notes of coffee and fruit. The body begins with a semi-ripe plum sweetness before rounding out into a long dry coffe-like finish. YogiBeera (2437), Hamburg, Germany Apr 21, 2005 Bottle: Nice rocky head on a dark brown - red colored brew. Very nice nose with lots of coffee and tabacco in it. The same applies for the taste, lots of chocolate mixed with tabacco - very nice, though all in all kind of flat in texture. pivo (2535), Germany Apr 17, 2005 Light roasted nose, dark opaque brown color, sea foam head. Some chocolate and toffee behind a deep roasted malt body. Some smoke comes through too. Charcoal, tobacco bitter end. Thin body and a crisp texture. Quite one dimensional and not really a good beer, but this is fun and enjoyable in the end. Take it for what it is. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA Apr 17, 2005 Poured an attractive reddish brown with the most ridiculously thick head I’ve ever seen. The head settled into what looked like mountain ranges of foam. Aroma reminds me of a typical stout except for the tang of wine. Taste is frankly boring. These people didn’t take the time to brew a truly world class stout. They decided to brew a generic and thin stout beer and add the little bit of port necessary to make this beer unique. It doesn’t really work. Mediocre. I ended up pouring about half a shot of whiskey into the glass and it improved this beer a whole lot. legion242 (1572), Richardson, Texas, USA Apr 11, 2005 Deep garnet color; Soapy bubbles; aroma of old cigarette butts left in wine. Good mouthfeel. Good coffee notes. Don’t get much "port" though. PorterPounder (3133), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Apr 10, 2005 500 ml botle - Habersham Beverage Warehouse, Savannah, Ga. Pours a dark ruby red fading to black with a frothy mocha colored head. Slight cocoa aroma, with some wine in the background. Flavor hints at greatness at first blush with bits of port and chocolate but mellows out quickly, slighlty earthy. Some nuttiness in there as well. Mouthfeel is much thinner than I like in my stouts and a bit chalky. Still a decent stout though. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Apr 6, 2005 Smells like cherries, rum and red wine all together - just great. For a "ruby" stout, I thought the color would be redder. Light, fluffy head - unusual for a stout. Fairly heavy; enough that one at a time is plenty. Dry finish is interesting but really one of the downsides to this beer. Wiseblood (658), Clarksville, Tennessee, USA Mar 22, 2005 Dark brown with a bubbly, beige long-lasting head. Aromas of roasted malts and red fruit. First taste is a burnt, roasted character that slowly reveals a mild chocolate quality. Slight winey character is also present. Dark and rich with a woody note in the finish.
