The nose is salty with some hints of malts, the taste is the same more bitter and salty. I couldnt really get into this one, may have been the salt, may have been that I am getting kind of stouted out. BuckNaked (1204), Tempe, Arizona, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 21, 2004 Bottle (Purchased 4/20/04): Pours with a lasting, thick, high, brownish-white head and a dark reddish-brown color. Typical Irish stout aromas with a grape/port aroma readily apparent. Interesting flavor, as expected, of Irish stout + port wine with more carbonation that expected as well as a bitter, almost burnt chocolate aftertaste. I think this has potential to be great if it were smoother, less carbonated and used darker malts and slightly more bitter hops. Interesting. Need to try this to relieve a hang over in the morning as the description describes it. heemer77 (4303), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Apr 19, 2004 Large light tan head with a very dark body. Tons of lacing. Strong raisin smell with some oak. This is dry and makes my mouth pucker. Almost an ok dry stout, but there is too much wine-like character and not in a good way. This is not drinkable. Too sour and dry. This is very overrated. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 18, 2004 Nice tan head on a black body. Roasted malt aroma with some berries in the background. Somewhat bitter flavor of roasted malt, liquorice and hops. Thin dry finish. An OK stout but the flavor definately lacks some complexity. ChristianScheffel (4481), Odense, Denmark
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 15, 2004 Black with a short lived light brown head. Aroma of roast malt, wood, and fruits including grapes and cherry. A slightly acidic initial impression, fruity flavour with some bitterness and a long aftertaste with cherry. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 14, 2004 Sampled at the Peoria Int'l Beer Festival. Labeled Ruby Stout on the bottle. Chocolate brown colored, with lots of little brown particles suspended throughout. Bland malty aroma, with slight notes of citris, burnt sugar and red grape. Rather hoppy flavor initially, with sweet malts coming to play in the middle and finish. Nothing special. An overrated beer if I've ever seen one. fasteddieIX (55), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2004 Bottle. Pours a jet black with a very thick brown head. Sweet aromas; flavor of molasses, burnt sugar, and, true to it's name, port wine. Finishes with a nice balance of dry and sweet. I wouldn't go out of my way to get this one, but it's quite good nonetheless. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 2, 2004 Black with a thick almond head. Burnt sweet molasses cooked sugar aroma. Has a grape/red wine feel to the start but in no way finishes dry. A really full and smooth ending, the two go very well together.
