Choos (504), Taylors Hill, Australia Jan 18, 2009 Aroma: mild cherry notes giving way to rich fortified wine, carbon and a hint of hop. These aromas intesify as it warms. Appearce: red highlight with a tan lasting head and sheet lacing. Flavour: intially extreme carbon notes and mounds of bitterness, gives way to light sweet notes and port flavours. Palate: thick and perfectly carbonated. Overall I think I drank this too early as the bottle says best by another 6 months, deserves a rerate. BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Dec 13, 2008 Bottle - best by 072909. Poured black with a creamy tan head that had a thin cap lasting and good lacing. Soft malts in the aroma. Big coffee flavor with some chocolate and roast background. Medium body with a roast coffee bitter aftertaste. Did not pick up the port at all. Bouteille brune, 500 ml, meilleure avant 06 02 10, achetée via Roland and Russell. savourée le 3 décembre 2008, œil noire avec des reflets rubis foncé, opaque, bonne mousse beige qui se transforme en une couverture, un peu de dentelle, nez torréfaction, léger vanille, bouche torréfaction, rôti, léger vanille, léger réglisse, finale courte mousseuse en torréfaction avec une bonne présence de vanille, légère âcreté, très légère astringence, texture soyeuse provenant du porto, corps moyen, carbonatation moyenne, en résumé ok MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Nov 17, 2008 Bottle at Chaucer’s Pub in London, Ontario- A deep brown pour that lets in some light, is topped with a frothy mocha cap with nice retention and lacing. The aromas here are dark chocolate, black coffee, some dark fruits, cherry, a smidge of hops, but no port to speak of. Tastes strongly of black coffee mixed with dark chocolate, a bit lactic, some slightly fruity components which may be from the port. Bitter towards the end, but a bit thin in terms of a stout. Pretty good. FlyingSwine (169), Littleton, Colorado, USA Nov 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours a DARK brown/black with a fairly thick and slick off-white head. No lacing. Very little aroma which was a bit odd. Flavor was good, but I never really picked up the Port. There was a hint of brandy, but the typical sweetness of a port was missing. Palate was medium, creamy (although a bit watery), some carbonation with a slightly dry finish. Overall a fairly drinkable session stout, but not all that interesting. AsaNewt (113), blackpool, Lancashire, England Oct 29, 2008 Bottle. Off white head with a black silk body.nose is lighter than expected. flavour is mocha but the palette a bit watery. I have to say have had this on draught and is a lot better. The port does balance the bitterness and is a good drinkable beer. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Oct 22, 2008 Very dark with thick creamy head. Looks great, makes me expect a great, deep, complex stout. Ended up being lighter, with dark burnt wood and chocolate, and even a bitterness and coffee. Not sure I taste the port. The thinness makes it drinkable, but also not something I need again. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 20, 2008 Pitch black pour all the way to the edges and two fingers of light tan head. Some great sticky film of lacing. The nose really lets on to the sweet port wine, vinuous and sticky over some roasted stout malts and a bit of hop and chocolate bitterness. Taste is smooth roasty malt, licorice and chocolate, then a rush of port wine, sweet and tart fruits and a great finish.
