Deep brown to black in colour, roasty malt nose, with a faint hint of port. Very charry ash tray like roasted malt flavour, almost a bit too charry.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes of red wine and plum. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation. I'm not fond of the growing sourness in the finish, but it's a pleasant smelling and attractive stout.

The second you take the top off this bottle you get an explosion of chocolate powder aroma which soon dissipates to leave vinous notes. Impenetrable black colour but unfortunately no head. Taste is predominantly winey, chocolate and roast barley which lingers as a dry, bitter aftertaste. Interesting beer from a small English microbrewer.

Nose has chocolate, coffee and malt, deep brown, ruby at the sides, small toffee head. Flavour is liquorice, roast coffee and cocoa, some red pitfruit and a bit nutty as well. Medium bodied, bitter, quite dry. Very good.

Called "Ruby Stout" on my bottle. Garnet to dark purple and very "Grapey" smelling. Not at all the flavor I was expecting, though. I was thinking that it would have a kind of gooey port flavor, but instead is very dry. Lighter, too. Maybe I can taste a little port, maybe not. Very subtle.

Not a bad sweet stout. It has a pleasant roasty flavor and aroma. Full of hazelnuts maybe, and chocolate and crystal malts. The flavor is mild, even for a stout and seems to lack substance. The carbonation is smooth and creamy, very melow. It leaves a good refreshing tingle in your mouth.

Bottle. Dark ruby-brown with a good sized light tan head. Interesting aroma - fairly malty/roasty with notes of coffee and smoke, and a tinge of sour fruit. Body is on the thin side - decent for an ale, but light for a stout. Flavour follows on the aroma - sweet roasty notes of the top, some mild smoke and coffee, and a dry, sourish finish. Pretty neat little beer.

Cask Jet-black beer with a B.C."H.". Slight-sweet, some typical porter-roasted notes, but especially a fry or a roast piece of meat... Ink-like, but sweet taste, with a slight moccha-like finish. Warming up, some fruity-estery noes. Medium bodied, quite slick. Must have been a very Scottish dash of Portwine.
