This was all daknole’s fault. Pours a thin coffee color with a trim beige head. Smells malty -- almost sour, actually. Tastes of cherry sucrets and grass. Gross.

Flavour is composed of semi sweet chocolate malts, medium bitter roast and mineral, burnt toast. Palate is semi sweet, rounded, slightly thin, lowish cask condition. Harsh bitter roast lingering with some dark fruits.

Cask at The Bishops’ Mill (JDW), Durham, Ł1.99/pint.
Black with a thick, cream-coloured head. There are dark malts, chocolate and a little smoke in the aroma. The body is disappointingly thin and watery but the flavours are appealing - a pleasant blend of cocoa, cream, caramel and berries, although I couldn’t detect much of the promised port. Okay.

Black beer, brown head. A bit of coffee in the smell, which is pretty dry. Flavour’s dry too... a splash of coffee, earthy malt, bitter chocolate and a healthy hit of the port too. Very drinkable.

[cask, at the Great British Beer Festival 2015] - Hanlons Brewery Port Stout, 4.8%, Bronze winner "speciality beers" at this event. Dark brown, with a small, beige head. Licorice, chocolate and wee roasted malts on the nose. Medium body, hardly watery at all. Mild carbonation. Dark chocolate, some licorice, some vanilla at the start, mild floral notes. More explicit roasted malts towards the middle, dark chocolate mainly. Finish is closer to cold espresso, but the vanilla note keeps the going soft. Aftertaste slightly sour espresso, again with a light vanilla note. Really not bad medium-strength stout.
