COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardyís Ale is the beer enthusiastís equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and weíre still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beeróif you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

Bottle bought by me and Ktwse at Brewdog Bar Stockholm charity auction May 2th. Pours a deep caramel with almost no head. Swirling it leaves nice lacerations on the inside of the glass. Increcible, complex aromas of caramel, raisins, toffee, honey, figs, dates, prunes, slight booze. Taste is absolutely gorgeous: raisins, marinated prunes and dates with layers of caramel, figs, butterscotch, burnt sugar, vanilla. Mouthfeel is very smooth and nicely textured with a very pleasant oily and sticky palate. Aftertaste is caramel, vanilla, prunes, dates, figs, burnt sugar. Just lingers and lingers in the mouth. Fantastic - a truly memorable experience!

Pours clear brown burgundy with minimal tan head. Aroma of butterscotch, toffee, light alcohol, prunes and dates, raisins, muscovado. Taste is boozy sweet, complex and balanced, initial sweet followed by light bitter then alcohol sweet. Body is rich and creamy with soft carbonation.

2004 bottle shared thanks to lithy. Pours a dark golden brown color without a head. Aroma is of vanilla and caramel with mostly dark fruits/raisins in there. Basically smells like candy. Taste is super sweet but not overdone, less sweet than JW Lee. Wow just really tasty stuff. Thick and syrupy with low carb.

Aroma of sweet caramel, raisins, and vanilla. Flavor is malty prunes, rock candy, and a ton of vanilla. And some whiskey. A surprising fruitiness. I wish this rating was more informative.

2008 vintage from Sherbrooke Liquor, Edition #47228. No idea this was already 6 years old! Pours murky muddy brown with zero head - of course, itís a barley wine. Strong alcohol smell on the nose with fruits and some nuttiness trying to come through. Flavour starts as licorice with hazelnut and caramel. Solid, thick mouthfeel. Iíve had better barleywines but this is still quite nice - maybe next time Iíll cellar a bottle for 4 more years.

This tasted like bottled soy sauce and jaeger. Iím not sure if I got a bad bottle or not. I could pick up the typical barely wine notes struggling to pierce through the overwhelmingly salty taste in this rare 2005 find. I have a few others I will taste and compare. I was extremely disappointed.

2003. Rather oxidized and sherry like. A privilege to taste. Itís still beautiful and complex.

2004 bottle at Brouwerís a few nights ago. Itís come up in conversations a few times, and I thought this would be a good night to finally try one. Pours completely still, crystal clear, red-copper. Gorgeous, more like a spirit than a beer. Aroma and taste are going together in this description, because I donít think I could restrain myself from jumping in. Raisins, plums, sherry are the dominant notes. Wow ... this is 10 years old and doesnít feel like itís just coming into itself -- no sign that itís anything but exactly what it should be. Perhaps this is something like a beer fountain of youth, in the sense that there are no off-notes in flavor or aroma from stale hops or oxidation. Thereís some nice honey-like sweetness, dark raisins, spirits -- this is one I can just sip and sip by a fire for dessert. Full body, rich, completely still and it feels just right like that. Overall: what a treat. Iím likely to order a few more bottles of these on future trips before they disappear for good.
