3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I enjoyed a 2006 edition bottle of Thomas Hardy’s ale a couple of days ago. It had then been aged for about 5 years.
There were only hints of carbonation and foam. Mostly imaginary I guess.
The palette had some slight hints of carbonation as well, and lots of heat and fullness.
Aroma is quite intense, but not extremely interesting. Sherry, plum and anis dominate the fragrances.
The immediate taste was very much of sweet liquorices and plum. Reminds me a bit of barleywine, but it is not as sweet.
The aftertaste was a little bit disappointing; as I felt it did not bring anything new, just fizzled out a bit. Maybe I am being a bit unfair, and maybe I am actually comparing it to the characteristics of a single malt, but I was expecting something more.
A very nice and ale to sip and enjoy over a long period of time. Don’t open one of these for a drinking game with your buddies.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle share taster. Mini vertical.
2004: dark amber. Aroma of raisin, cherry, alcohol. Taste is so sweet and syrupy. So brilliant.
2005: hazy amber, no cap. Aroma is sour, prunes, honey. Taste is sour and tart.
2006: cloudy amber. A blasted guy was pouring the 2004 & 2006 LOL. Aroma is wet dog, dark fruit, and a muted dry sour note that was more prominent in the '05. Taste is tart with a LONG dry finish.
Overall, a good mini vertical with a lot of variance.

Had at Max's in Baltimore. 2004 bottle. Pours ruby amber. Minimal head. Aroma is sweet dark fruits. Breathtaking. Flavor is chocolate and raspberries. Malt and strawberries. Just wonderful. Nothing detracts from this. Even the college kids screaming about football. God is good for giving us such things.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
I’ve had this many times. This tasting was of a 2004 bottle, poured in dedication to Walt Powell. Pours a ruby copper. Sweet brandy and caramel aroma. Minimal carbonation and big mouthfeel. Flavors of sweet malts, port, caramel, slight alcohol. Overall has held up well over time with minimal oxidation. Always a great brew, fresh or well aged. My rating is based on an accumulation of tastings over the years.

Bottle thanks to SSSteve, thanks! Pours deep red and approaching brownish and clear with a few chunkies. Nose is complex fruits, sticky malts, toasted biscuits, grapes, raisins, dates, and some warming alcohol. Flavor is grapes, raisins, sticky sweet malts, cooked caramels, heavy bready malt character, sticky feel. Some odd spicy flavors are mixed in there. Pretty damn good and interesting. warming.

250 ml bottle from...source unknown, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. 2008 vintage, bottle # 25284.
App.: Clear deep mahogany with a so-so light tan head.
Aroma: Rich, sweet, brothy/savoury/meaty, lots of dark dried fruitiness, dark treacle, brown sugar, lightly oxidized, boozy, held up nicely.
Palate: Medium+ body, relaxed effervescence.
Flav.: Rich, sweet, malty and boozy, lots of dark dried fruits, brown sugar bordering on molasses, treacle, chocolate notes, warming booziness; sweet with limited bitterness and a large amount of warming alcohol, deep, rich, sweet, fruity malts last for a long time, as does the booze.
A 250 mL bottle is appropriate. Nice stuff in limited quantity.
