COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

I enjoyed a 2006 edition bottle of Thomas Hardy’s ale a couple of days ago. It had then been aged for about 5 years. There were only hints of carbonation and foam. Mostly imaginary I guess. The palette had some slight hints of carbonation as well, and lots of heat and fullness. Aroma is quite intense, but not extremely interesting. Sherry, plum and anis dominate the fragrances. The immediate taste was very much of sweet liquorices and plum. Reminds me a bit of barleywine, but it is not as sweet. The aftertaste was a little bit disappointing; as I felt it did not bring anything new, just fizzled out a bit. Maybe I am being a bit unfair, and maybe I am actually comparing it to the characteristics of a single malt, but I was expecting something more. A very nice and ale to sip and enjoy over a long period of time. Don’t open one of these for a drinking game with your buddies.

Slightly hazy dark amber color with just a bit of tan foam. Aroma is really complex with caramel, dried figs and raisins, slight menthol, a bit of rum and a touch of walnut. Taste starts with dried raising, figs, date, continues with earthy flavors, slightly nutty and some brown sugar. Sticky, syrupy mouthfeel. Extremely complex beer, a true masterpiece.

Had this multiple times, seems like somehow my rating was deleted. Tasted all years.2004 and 2006 with 3-4 years on them where my favorites but not in par with Eldridge Pope versions. Nonetheless a nice sipper and a good beer to age.

Bottle number 58803, from 2007 Clear Mahogany with no head. Aroma vinous, raisin, sherry, dark fruit, molasses, plums, rich caramel, notes of chocolate and bubblegum. Taste heavy, syrupy, and very sweet. No noticeable carbonation or bitterness. Soy notes, wood tannin, burnt sugar, alcoholic palate. This thing is heavy. It is rich, and full, and should be drank very slowly, preferably in the dead of winter, with a couple of friends.

Bouteille 2004. [notes 2005]

2003 Vintage, from a trade with Alex (beermack) and shared with tbub18 in Brooklyn at a bottle share. There was a lot of malt flavor -- think caramel, syrup, and a bit of bread -- like you’d expect for a nearly 12% Old Ale, but there was a heavy amount of oxidization as well after 12 years. It had taken on a distinctly vinous and sweet "Port" flavor, and while it was interesting and distinctive, it also was a bit tangy, oxidized, and even slightly cloying.

2004 vintage. Pours a lifeless dark ruby with no head and thus no lacing. Nose is of intense caramel, molasses and madeira. While I say madeira it is surprisingly not too oxidized for such an old brew. Taste is moderately sweet and offers caramel, tobacco, oxidized alcohol. Body is medium-full and carbonation nil. The once hot (I’m guessing) alcohol is now really subtle and appreciated. Quite an experience for sure! Held up better than I expected and I would be really curious to try an older sample now!
