COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardyís Ale is the beer enthusiastís equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and weíre still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beeróif you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.

2006 bottle. Pours a dark caramel with small and quickly disappearing tan head. Aroma of dried fruit and malt all around. First taste is overwhelming and very warm. Taste is of very ripe to over-ripe fruit, strong sweetness, malt, and alcohol, hints of sweet sherry and oak. Finish is sweet, syrupy, and warm.

2005 vintage @ Shrewsbury Bottle Share, Aug 15. Many thanks to Mike for this rare beast. Aged for 10 years undisturbed in a dusty cellar. Musky vinous old-ale aroma. Cobweb, port and molasses in the taste. Extremely rich, thick and boozy.

SlackerMads (2222) - DENMARK - JUL 25, 2015
Bottle, 2008 version. Pours murky brown with a small tan head. Oxidised nose with some cardboard, caramel, honey. Lots of honey in the flavour, heather, grain, forest, wood, booze soaked dark dried fruits, port wine, over ripe banana. Full body, heavy sweet, moderately acidic, light salty, medium bitter. Complex and carries the alcohol well, but not something I would seek out.

Old ass bottle from the rotter. Pours nearly flat. Nose is a dried raisin with some dusty malt. Taste is like a dried fig thatís been in the fridge for ten years. Moderare sweetness. Ugh.

HopsandBolts (202) - Ontario, CANADA - MAR 14, 2015
250 ml bottle from the LCBO. 2008 edition.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown no head.

Aroma: Rum, toffee and molasses.

Flavours: Rum, molasses, toffee, hints of coffee and leather.

Mouthfeel: Thick with no carbonation. It sticks to your mouth.

Overall: A really nice complex old ale that is still holding up after 7 years cellaring in my wine fridge. I bought around 8 bottles when it came out and haven been drinking one each year. This is my last bottle. If this ever comes out again I will buy as much as I can get my hands on.

25cl bottle, 2007 vintage, Q56821. I donít even remember where I bought this - it has followed me through two moves. Today I poured a brown, almost non-carbonated liquid into an Orval glass and enjoyed the raisin and wood aroma mixing with the tones of some funky jazz. The mouthfeel is smooth and oily, the flavour is so thick you can chew it. Thereís raisin, toffee, chocolate, yorkshire pie, a bit of burn, figs, coffee, beef, and a rainy English autumn day. All poured into this minute bottle. This is as close to perfection as you can get. Can I have a crate?
