Bottle: Regular. Cask: Occasional (originally a Wetherspoons special - May 2006).
This is a smoked Celtic porter, with an initial sweet flavour leading to a full-bodied silky-smooth liquorice on the palate and a bitter hop finish.

0.5 l bottle from K-Supermarket Länsiväylä, Jyväskylä. Opaque black color. Gentle soft roastedness and smoke with caramel, some fruitiness, licorice, coffee and peaty soil. Dryish slightly metallic finish. OK mellow porter.

from crackedkettle.com - black coloured with a little beige foam left; nice lacework; the aroma is dusty with strong notes of cocoa and dark chocolate, the whole thing being well integrated ina decent smokiness; the palate is sweet and tart showing a light sourness; medium to full malt backbone, fizzy and malty chocolatey finish with light smoking tones - pretty good

Virtually black color, good-sized tan head; aroma roasted malt, sweet chocolate (dominating the aroma when the beer is cool, fading slowly away as it gets warmer), licorice, burned wood and peat; thin body, flat carbonation; roasted/burnt flavor with notes of wood, tobacco and salty licorice - not actually smoky, but more like burnt already; finish is slightly hoppy, dry and almost ashy. It´s nice to see this great porter at only 4.7 ABV, but then again I have to wonder how great would have it been with a percent or two more.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. This was a rather disappointing porter for me; pitch black in colour with a loose tan head, it missed the sparkle of colour I associate with a good porter; the aroma had some roasted malts and vague peat smoke, but lacked depth; the body was thin with some licorice flavour; leading to a gentle bitter finish with some milk chocolate. I was expecting far more evidence of the smoky character.

29th October 2008. Bottle in the Rake. Opaque black beer, pretty low carbonation. Smooth subtle chocolate and vanilla. A little smoke but not overwhelming, nicely judged. Minerally. Not bitter or dry.

Cask - West Gate Inn (JDW), Canterbury. A mostly black beer with a slight brown hued edging and a doming, two finger tan head. Aromas take some warming up, eventually lending themselves to good choc notes and roasted malt, liquorice tones. Flavours seem a bit muddled and overbearing. Strong roasted, coffee malts and a hoppy bitterness with a light sour liquorice quality. Creamy, soft mouthfeel, medium body.
