Bottle: Regular. Cask: Occasional (originally a Wetherspoons special - May 2006).
This is a smoked Celtic porter, with an initial sweet flavour leading to a full-bodied silky-smooth liquorice on the palate and a bitter hop finish.

Bottle. High creamy and lasting light brown head. Very dark red brown body, almost black. Aroma of roasted barley malt, cream and coffee with a touch of choccolate. Flavor of coffee, smoked and roasted malt, choccolate. Fair amount of bitterness, long bitter aftertaste and a low carbonation. Well done for a beer with such a low alcohol percentage. Nice surprise. .

Bottle. Blackish beer with a strong lightly brown head. The aroma is lightly roasted, and the flavour is very dry, very bitter, deeply roasted and slightly smokey. Overall a good bold tasting roasted and bitter beer, with a hint of smokiness.

bottle from TuckersMaltings. Deep black colour, mid-sized creamy beige head. Aroma of coffee and bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, pleasantly malty and pleasant hoppy flavours with hints of coffee, cocoa powder, bitter chocolate, raisins and a touch of smoke. A delicious brew to say good-bye to 2008.

Bottle. Black with a beige head. Aromas are earthy with sweet oats. Smoky and yeasty with mellow berries. Alcohol is evident. Flavours are light roast malts with hints of salt. Some sweet caramel with a dry finish. Decent.

Bottle courtesy of PilsnerPeter. Dark brown beer with a thin light tan head. A touch of soft caramel and light maris otter malts. A touch of herbal spiciness and a bit of cherry esters and orange marmalade flavour. Lightly berryish with a touch of toast over the top. I didn’t get much smokiness from this one either, but it’s a pretty nice brew. Light earthy dustiness on the back. As it warms I get a touch of light cocoa and soft raisin/date. Sort of a porter/bitter hybrid.

Bottle: (Thanks oh6gdx!) Pours a very deep brown with a touch of ruby in the light toped by a creamy tan head. Fairly estery nose- some raisin notes, mild chocolate cream, soft malts- very British feeling. Light on the palate. Softly malty with mild dark fruit notes- a touch of raisin and a papery/oxidized note (although it’s very subtle) Mild roast with residual fruitiness in the finish. No real smoke is detectable at all, but a decent British-style Porter.

Bottle. Black, firm mocha head. Very nice smoky nose, smooth chocolate, coffee, tar and wood. Smoothly tarry flavor with salty liquorice, dry roasty and coffeeish finish. Chocolate comes up front when warm. Medium bodied, smooth carbonation. A great porter, immense character.
