3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Lightly hazed amber with a thin white head and some retention. Fruity and malty aroma impression is caramel and toffee, red apples and cherry liqueur, with a touch of pine resin hoppiness and subtle basement must yeastiness. Full bodied, moderately sweet with strong bitterness, the hop character is grassy and sharp and lasting in the finish, and the mineral quality that seems common in Okkara beers works well with the rich malt sugar and sharp hops. It doesn’t scream Belgian, there’s not much in the way of yeast, and with the strong resin hoppiness and caramel malt it fits more taste-wise with American Strong Ale and Imperial Red Ales. More interesting aroma than their other products, and though it’s overly bitter (hence the ASA resemblance), it works well against the sugar. The most enjoyable beer I’ve had from Okkara. Definitely not a booze-bomb or overly alcoholic like some reviewers have mentioned, I’m happy to find.

1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottle. A hazy, dark golden beer with a dense, finger-thick beige head. Lacings. The aroma is quite boozy, with dried fruits and some sugary malts. Boozy, sugary flavor too. Some bitterness. Rather dry on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation level. Lasting sweet, boozy and bitter finish. Not very well crafted this one, lasting the complexity a quad should have and way too boozy. 141108

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle @ the 7th Shrewsbury Bottle Share, brought by me, many thanks to humlelala for the trade! Also glad to make a rare contribution to a new country tick for Master Haddock below. After previous poor ratings I wasn’t expecting a lot from this, but I think it surprised us all. Very rich and boozy, even for a 10.4% quad, with dominant hoppiness cutting through some dark fruit-laden malts. A great end to the night.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The last beer at the August Shrewsbury bottle share: cheers Mat for bringing the 500ml bottle (BBD 15 Sep 2017). Golden amber pour with a white crown. I thought it more hoppy than other raters seem to have done: have they changed the recipe because although it had plenty of semi-sweet maltiness in the aroma and taste it was predominantly hoppy (or had my taste buds been shot?). The alcohol came through nicely and this was a fittingly good end to a great night of beer tasting. This also took my personal country total to 99, onwards and upwards.
