Remarkably sweet but with a light flyover of crisp continental hops. Slight bitterness lingers in the back of the throat. Intense coffee and caramel notes, highlited by a strong roasted nuttiness. Creamy, silky palate. Rich mouthfeel. Nice complex array of flavors, great mouthfeel. A well made, enjoyable beer.

500ml bottle. Pours deep brown with a mocha colored head. Nose of some soured grains and lemon juice along with a light bready roast note. Spicy and peppery on the palate, with a lingering toast and bread note, and again a sweet lemon citrus-type bite. The body is very thin but that doesn’t hinder this beer as much as the almost moldly lemon juice overtone. Very strange.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 tytoanderso (1476) - SLP, Minnesota, USA - NOV 19, 2007
Bottle. Pours dark brown with amber highlights. Aroma is like a cross between a European Strong Lager and a Porter. Some roasted malt, banana sweetness, leather and cardboard. Flavor has some roasted malt up front with prune, plum and banana sweetness on the back end of the palate. Finishes mildly roasty and bitter.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BBB63 (4939) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - NOV 14, 2007
Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Pours a deep brown hue with reddish highlights, small lasting tan frothy head and spotty lacing. The aroma has notes of toffee and molasses, walnut, dusty yeast, plum, prune and tobacco esters as well. The taste is sweet as expected by not cloy has there is some fruity twang and some smoke to assist balance. The mouth feel is slight syrupy and but moves along quickly. I nice little fall brew indeed, underrated IMO.
4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 SN11 (60) - USA - NOV 4, 2007
UPDATED: NOV 9, 2007 16oz Bottle with a dragon in flames. Nice! Pours total black with brown head, lacing is minimal. Roasted hops, pecans, caramel, honey and some other stuff which I can’t point my finger at. Interesting. Fire brewed, smoky and malty. Could use a bit more bitterness otherwise this is an excellent and dare I say underrated dark beer. I’ll come back to this for sure.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gusler (2655) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - NOV 2, 2007
The beer pours from the 500ml bottle a somewhat hazy brown with definite ruby highlights, the head a three finger light brown that lingers long, lacing forms an obscuring sheet. Nose has a deep roasted grain aroma, sweet, caramel and a bit of licorice, clean and fresh. Start has a nice sweet toasted malt presence; just a bit bitter at the back, top is moderate in feel to the palate. Finish has customary acidity, the hops adequate, dry slightly bitter aftertaste, a drinkable beer, “Dunkel, Euro Dark Lager or Baltic Porter”?
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 dkazuk (248) - winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA - OCT 29, 2007
500ml bottle.
Pours a deep black with sparkly red highlights and an off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and nuts on a fruity bed. I also pick up some coffee and maybe even smoked sausage as it warms. Has a medium body and smooth carbonation. Nice mouth feel. The flavours I’m getting are of sweet roasted malts and prunes with a fruity bitter finish. Roasty aftertaste that gains some chocolate notes after a little warmth. Complex and interesting beer. Will buy this one again.

Bottle. Metallic chocolate malt aroma. Dark brown color with small head. Light molasses malt flavor with a mild hops finish. A tad on the light side but very nice flavor.
