3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 heemer77 (4754) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - MAR 30, 2007
From a 500ml bottle. The body is a very dark brown that is nearly black. The head is light tan and stays around. The aroma has sweet tobacco notes with some cantalope. There is definitely the typical bubblegum nose I often get in dunkels. The taste is lightly roasted almonds with some sweet notes of bubblegum. The finish has some sweetened coffee. The mouthfeel is smooth and slick. A nice dunkel, but it is a hard style to make great.

Dark red/brown with a quickly diminishing tan head. Nose is somewhat sweet, metallic, with some slight chocolate and roasted notes. Flavor is a bit tangy, relatively thin, with a metallic twinge and a bit of chocolate.

From a 500ml can - a medium body and full mouthfeel with a slightly rich, chocolately flavor. Not too caramely like many Polish "ciemne" beers. OKAY dry/sweet flavor balance. Impressive flaming dragon illustration.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 SilkTork (4691) - Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom, WALES - MAR 19, 2007
500ml bottle from BeersOfEurope. A dark, malty, sweet lager with a gentle, mouse-like carbonation and flavours of French coffee, Mars bars and honey. Attractive label with an image of a phoenix rising through flames, and the dramatic byline of Fire-brewed Dark Beer. Finish is rather flat and metallic. The sweetness is pleasant, and this is not a heavy beer. But I don’t quite get dark lagers. I understand the crisp, bland, refreshing quality of a pale lager. But a dark lager asks for something more. And certainly the sweetness of this beer asks for a bit more balancing bitterness in the finish. It’s drinkable stuff, but fails in some areas for me - balance, mouthfeel, interest, development, irony and humour. Despite all that, I’d drink this again. There’s a subtle , beguiling mystery.

Can. Clear dark brown with a creamish frothy off-white mostly diminishing head. Sweet aroma of some roasted malts and grains. Flavour of sweet roasty malts, some hops and caramel. Dry roastish sweet finish. Too sweet.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sammy (5888) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 24, 2007
Found at Eagle Provisions, NYC. Very decent for its style, it has a decent dark appearance and malty aroma. Quite drinkable, nicely malted not sweet, balanced with some moderate bitterness. A bit of smoke in taste and average mouthfeel, I taste caramel. .
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beachbum25 (1033) - Powellville, Maryland, USA - FEB 12, 2007
500 Ml Bottle-Pours a moderate brown color w/almost no head, did have a little bit of lacing. Sweet, smoked, roasted malt aroma. Smoked flavor hits you on the first drink, has undertones of roasted malt & chocolate which become more evedent as you drink it, but the moderate smoked flavor never goes away. Nice bittersweet finish, good balance. Long finish.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 kramer (3376) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 9, 2007
500 ml bottle, via SoLan. Pours a clear dark mahogany brown under a small fizzy light brown head that faded quickly to a thin ring. Nose has lots of smoke with some grainy dry roasted malt. Flavor has a good bit of smoke up front followed by lots of sweet lightly roasty malt. A touch of coffee late in the finish. Zero hops present. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with quite a bit of risidual sugars. Light low level of fizzy carbonation. Finishes a little sticky. This really treads the line between a Smoked and a Dunkel. At first taste I thought it was clearly a Smoked, but the more I drank the sweeter it got, muting the smoke.
