500ml Bottle: Faint aroma of a hint of roasted malt and a hint of alcohol. Poured very dark brown/ruby in color with a very small, tan head that lasted around the edges only. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is slightly sweet. Tastes of slight roasted malt, slight soy sauce, slight chocolate, slight smoke, slight vanilla, and hints of tar and alcohol. Medium body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Roasted malt, slight tar, and hint of smoke finish. 8.3%ABV is noticeable in the aroma and flavor, but not to the extent of being ’hot.’

Bottle at Winking Lizard Crosswoods. Black pour with a big tan head. Roasty and malty nose with some metal. Sweet and creamy flavor with a roasty finish. Metallic character disappears as it warms. Not bad.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 durhambeer (2028) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - JAN 21, 2010
Bottle, and a cheap one at that. Pours dark brown, almost black with light showing through the edges. Big pink-tinted beige head and nice lacing. Dark fruits and cherries, roast chocolate on the nose. Similar taste, with slightly sour aspect though sweet overall. Nice chalky dry palate, though a touch thin. Lovely beer, especially for the price.

Bottle; poured a dark brown/black color with a small, but long lasting, tan head. Aroma of fruit, cherries, roasted malt, caramel and cocoa. Quite a nice aroma. Flavor was equally enjoyable. Roasted malt, cherries and fruit augmented by some caramel-chocolate notes. Alcohol hidden. Really soft on the palate. Very drinkable. Liked this one alot.

Bottle from Keg Liquors, IN. Deep brown with ruby highlights. Tall tan head with fine bubbles, medium carbonation that fell quickly. Aroma of chocolate and toasted malts with a bit of caramel. Tastes of chocolate, roast, some sweetness like toffee; low to no hops; balanced toward sweetness. Very drinkable, could have another.

Bottle thanks to my Polish friend. Pours with a deep brown near black body and a khaki head. Aroma of dark, fruity esters, red licorice, chocolate, dusty/dirty, and light earthy spices. Taste is leather, earth, smoke, chocolate, anise and charcoal. Light, refined bubbles. Quite good. Not too smokey. As it warms it becomes slightly lactic and metallic, although not unpleasantly so.

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2011 Pretty much black, tan head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with coffee, vanilla. Sweet and roasty with a quite metallic tang. Low carbonation is just about enough to stop it being syrupy. Finish is medicinal and metallic. I wasn’t expecting this to be as good as Zywiec Porter, but this was really disappointing. [2.1]
Dark brown with a coat of tan head. Toffee, roasted malt, coffee, plums. Oily. Sweet with mild roasted and coffee flavours, vanilla. Delicate spices. Just mouthfilling. Finish has some licorice, coffee astringency and a little wood. Lacks depth but a million miles from my last one of these.
