COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
652 is our American take on the old English Pale Ale style called ESB, but this is anything but bitter. A very simplistic blend of malts reveals a smooth drinking beer that is a touch on the sweet side with a light Centennial hop aroma. 652 still slides in at almost 6% ABV, and was created for the enjoyment of all. Like most American spinoffs of British creations, the Brits should be thanking us for our improvements, and you will too.

I get a very floral, zesty almost first take with hops on the back end fading slowly and leaving the palate pleased. Body is a little over medium. Nicely malted to tone down the bitterness. Very enjoyable ESB. My favorite I’ve found so far.

Tap. Pours clear amber, medium off white head, creamy with nice lacing. Aroma is caramel and light pine. Flavor is the same, light sweet, light piney bitter. Light body, silky mouthfeel. Very drinkable.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2013 Draft. Red copper color with a medium white head with nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and floral hops. Light body with some malt sweetness, caramel notes, and a bitter hop finish. Better the second time I tried it.

Draft. Poured medium amber with a medium-sized off-white head. Aroma was intensely floral with a good bit of caramel malt. Flavor was toasted malt, almost perfumey hops. Not quite what I expected but good.

On draught, slightly bitter on the nose, but not really a lot of aroma. A mixture of bitter and sweet. Bitter was a little to up front and unbalanced for me. I wouldn’t say it was an easy drinker, but it wasn’t hard either. Overall it is OK. May try again.

Draft at Rocket City Brewfest. Slightly sweet, malty aroma; clear amber with a creamy head. Not what I was expecting from a bitter - more malty and a bit sweet with enough hops to balance it out. I was tempted to rate this down as it did not really seem like a good ESB, but it’s a good beer despite not fitting the name.

On tap at Mellow Mushroom. The aroma is caramel, resin, and sourdough. The flavor is weak, with a mild bitterness and very little sweetness. The palate is medium, sticky, and a little astringent. Overall, this is a mediocre beer, that is not well balanced or easy to drink.

Growler from liquor express (thanks DiarmaidBHK!) pours dark red with a ton of head. Aroma is malty, sort of. Taste is bitter, finishes dry. Not my favorite style, but this one is not bad.

Draft from liquor express. Pours brown with a thin brown head that doesn’t leave any lacing. Not much on the nose. Has a slight maltiness on the tongue. Finish is bitter and slightly astringent. Not really feeling this one.

Little in the aroma world. Nice carbonation but bad head retention... good clarity. A little more bitter than a usual ESB. But not bad. Mild in bitterness still, enjoyable. Sweet ending, bitter start.... backward from usual. Not bad at all. I’m pretty impressed.
