Martinus (2854) - Baarle-Nassau, NETHERLANDS - NOV 26, 2013
Black as night, red hue, no head. Aroma of chocolate, caramle, roasted malts, red fruits, berries, blueberry, light liquorice (laurierdrop) and vanilla. Sweet flavour, cacao, malts, roasted malts, wood, vanilla, quite fruity. Full body, creamy. Finish chocolate, light coffee, dried red berries and lots of vanilla. Great beer, very balanced, smooth. Aged well, I’d say it’s at it’s top at the moment. Best fijn.

Pours pure black, half finger tan head, decent lacing. Smell huge oaky toffee and licorice, coco, red fruit, very strong licorice. Taste fudge and smooth vanilla, very sweet, coco, raspberry, cream and roast, bit of a burn on the end. Medium body Very interesting beer, very unique flavor for an imperial stout

UPDATED: NOV 7, 2013 Thx! to Kraddel. 275 ml. bottle split by 3. 2010 Vintage. Brewed on 03.11.2010. Pours black & the head is only mocha bubbles on the sides. Nose is much like the regular version very heavy on soy sauce but a bit toned down this time around. I am also getting in the back a mix of vanilla & brown sugar, touch caramel, some Teriyaki but less than the regular which jell more or less with the soy sauce. Taste is that of soy sauce, wood vanilla, very sweet with brown sugar, lots of bitter ground coffee beans, roast, very bitter cocoa, bitter herbs lingering in the finish. Little carb. Cold this one is better than the regular version. Once warmed up this one loses because the other one grains in fruity notes & loses the soy a bit whilst this one stays more or less the same. It is not bad but lacks a bit complexity, I am not particularly digging a lot of the flavours, esp. the soy sauce. Doesn’t seem like aging has lessened those. Honestly I expected more here. This one didn’t live up at all to its rating & reputation for me.

Bottle. Very dark, rapidly disappearing small head. Chocolate, vanilla and oak nose. Very smooth. Lots of oak, coffee, chocolate. Every ingredient is blended into a velvety, rich and sweet beer. But best in Britain? Hardly.

Bottle at home with friends, courtesy of Scott. Big thanks for this one!! Pour is murky brown with a small head that quickly dissipated. Big port, sherry, figs, raisins, light cocoa, red grapes, dark fruity, caramel, toffee, and bourbon aroma. Taste is sweet cocoa, espresso, sweet bourbon, brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel, a hint of vanilla, and spice with a roasted sweet finish. Slick/syrupy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. This was a real treat.

Bottle shared by Adam at my wedding, thanks! Pours an oily black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with some smooth dark grains and a hint of bitter chocolate. Flavor starts with dark chocolate and roasted malts and has a hint of raisin and dark grains in the finish.

Bottle shared at deyholla’s wedding. Thanks a ton to CGarvie for this amazingly generous hookup. Pours a deeper inky blackish hue, dark and ominous, a health opaque body with touches of subtlke brownish glow on the bottom and edges. A frothy tannish head atop stays as a filmy layer, laces ok. A good frothy layer sits atop, laces ok as a mellow ring. Aromas are lush and thicker, blackish malts meet toffee, black malts, and roasty elements. A touch smokey, some vanilla and lush creamy and silky dark malts. Touches of coffee, roast and toast. Initial is firmer bodied, cocoa and some subtle peaty smoke. Roasty and toasty, firm oak and vanilla. Gentle spirit. Not as deep and brooding as I’d expect. Cocoa, roast and toffee. Vanilla and wet wood, some cola, gentle black cherry. Middle is a bit thinned, quite approachable mixing vanilla and creamy silky dark malts, cocoa and oak. Gentle smoke element, touch of subtle iodine. Backend is a bit smokey and dry, a bit roasty and creamy, subtle chocolate and cocoa, some creaminess, coffee, and almost a peaty smoke and oak. Finish is a bit toasty, roasty, and oak. Some vanilla, warmth and spirit. Wow. Not as thick and brooding as you’d expect, a subtle scotch and peaty kick. Really interesting.

UPDATED: MAY 18, 2014

Aug 2013 - Bottle, 2010 vintage. Pours black with a beige ring of head. Smell is molasses, sherry and chocolate, roasted barley and oil. Becomes more chocolatey over time. A swirl brings out some hoppy sharp floral notes. Smells like it’s going to be strong… Body is big and slightly foamy, carbonation is quite high for the style. Taste - oily, roasted barley, liquorice. Oak is subtle but noticeable. Some whisky/bourbon. Background vanilla and chocolate. Red wine style tannic finish. Alcohol is not noticeable at all. Nice balance to this one. Complex and interesting. My girlfriend said ’disgusting’, so I guess it’s one that will divide opinion! (4.4)

Dec 2013 - Bottle, 2011 vintage. Again, black with a brown ring of head. Smell - molasses, treacle, toned down coffee. Body is big and soft, not foamy, low carbonation, tacky in the mouth. Taste - dark chocolate, a deep woodiness, a bit of apple, no sharpness whatsoever, finishes sweet and sour. A very refined and very tasty beer - a lesson in balance. This is even better than the 2010. (4.6)
