2011 bottle Pours pitch black with a dark, short lasting, fizzy head. Aroma is both dry and sweet and burned sugar, wooden notes, vinous fruityness, toffee, light roast, hints of vanilla, salmiak and licorice. Very complex aroma for sure! Not crazy powerfull though. Massive taste with sweet toffee, wooden and roasted bitterness, slight milk chocolaty sweetness. Very sticky and full bodied. Medium carb. Really nice and complex beer!

Bottle. Pours black with a thin light brown edge. Aromas of sweet dark fruits, raisins, licorice, some coffee beans, vanilla, caramel candy, toffee. Taste is pretty licorice up front, lots of dry oaky notes, toffee, sweet dark fruits, some chocolate and coffee notes.

2012 vintage. Finally getting around to rating this one. Pours jet black with a huge amount of viscosity. Light brown foamy head which retreats fairly quickly. Aroma is chocolate, fruits, some vanilla, oak. Taste is all of the above with long, lingering velvety notes. Mouthfeel is incredibly full and luxurious. Tastes better than I expected it to even with the high placing on here.

DocJitsu (1295) - Pensacola, Florida, USA - OCT 7, 2014
Pours a viscous, opaque, very dark brown with a short grey-brown head that unfortunately attenuated too quickly; even with a vigorous pour. Dark chocolate fudge brownie, whiskey, vanilla, and coconut aromas. Thick in the palate, but not extraordinarily so. The flavors are a little more subdued than what I’m picking up in the nose. But they are identical.

2010. The beer is black with a small medium brown head. Wisps of bubbles after a minute. The aroma is chocolate forward with a strong, rich caramel backbone. Milky chocolate. More milk chocolate in the taste. Excellent caramel sweetness. Nice and rich. Some tobacco character. Very mild acidity, quite good for an aged beer. Little oxidation character for a ~4 year old stout. Mild roast, shows through in the finish. Smooth feel. No real alcohol heat. Some cola in there. Solid beer.

Bottle of 2010 vintage, thanks Gunnar! Aroma is rich and full of chocolate and roast with some light smoke notes. Hints of anise, leather and tobacco. Light dark fruit esters. Pours black with a small, faint, dark mocha head that doesn’t move leaving a thin film on the edges and the center. Flavor is moderately sweet with quite a bit of chocolate complexity. Some medium light roast with some smokey notes. Low notes of tobacco and leather. Medium low dark fruit esters of plums, prunes and dried cherries. Hints of raisins. Some light alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low alcohol. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice beer with a great dark malt character with some balanced smoke notes. The leather and tobacco notes work well without becoming soy sauce. Lots of chocolate without being overly sweet and diabetes-like.

I admit to being a fan of strong dark beers and this is the tops, Never, never, never drink this masterpiece chilled, drink at room temperature. For complete enjoyment, pour slowly into large jug in one pour leaving sediment behind, I know it will be hard but leave it for an hour, then pour into bulbous glass, I often use a Douglas Scotch Ale thistle glass. ENJOY. It may of course be kept for up to 10 years, can you leave it that long ???

Big thanks to Robert Dale for hooking me up with this one. 2010 bottle. 275ml. Black with a finger of mocha head that recedes into a ring. Sweetness, chocolate candy, caramel, malted milk balls, some boozy heat, werthers, chewy body possibly over carbonated body. Some of the sour barrel notes at the end. Pretty good stuff, not sure it’s as high as the ratings but glad to try it.

Bottled, 275ml, 2005 version kindly given to me by Fin, cheers buddy. My 10k rating. Jet black with brown head. This is thick on the palate, almost syrupy with a couch medicine character, rich darkly roasted bitter malts with a heavy tarrry presence. Full on throughout the beer but then there is a big fruitiness along with an acrid woodiness. Loads of character to this and still perfect with the ageing, 9 yrs. Superb.
