3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Eebria
Pitch black, large tan head, some lacing
Aroma of rich deep dark malts, savoury soy, oak wood, leather, smooth deep mellow roast, complex, tad of dark fruits, woody
Taste of very rich dark malts, deep mellow roast, savoury notes, very oaky, dark chocolate, tar, complex, very savoury, yeast, too oaky for me
Palate - Full body, fairly sweet, alcohol a bit noticeable. Finish as main flavour, lingering rich dark malts, lots of oak
Overall - Well I tried it at last...very rich and complex but its too oaky and woody - and I’m not that keen on that oaky flavour - its a bit astringent. I prefer the plain GKH - it’s more drinkable. Maybe other years are better. Going on this year alone it’s not the best UK impy. I ordered 2 bottles and came to the same conclusion with both.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle thanks to cgarvieuk. pour is like black ink with nearly no head at all, only a thin film of oil and faint floaties on top. Nose is chocolate and vanilla with a strong wood tannin aroma, like oak. Taste is chocolate and wood, just straight wood. Not much vanilla, and tastes almost a bit drying and astringent from the wood. Still a slick, full mouthfeel, accentuated by a lack of carbonation. Not still, but petulant, maybe. Overall, I think the wood steals the show here, but without any spirit character to bring it into the realm I enjoy, which is boozy. In this case, the wood doesn’t do a huge favor to the beer, in my opinion.

4.1 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2012 bottle in trade (thanks Erik!). Black with no head. Aroma is phenomenal - rich sweet tobacco, stewed dark fruits, mild aromatic anise. Taste is perfect balance of sweet and savoury - dark fruits, molasses, mild soy sauce, little oxidised but works for it; mild charred barrel, some easygoing port qualities coming through (it’s still beer people!). Medium carbonation on the palate but not full bodied. Overall, great beer - was expecting something totally overhyped in the usual British beer tradition, but they nailed it!
