1st Rate of 2016: 330ml bottle (Lot 825 BBE 10/2016). Poured into a Westmalle chalice just after midnight early hours of 1st Jan. What a great way to start a year. Drank with a ’Double Decker’ chocolate bar, really worked. The deep malty brew with it’s chocolate and coffee flavours were complimented by the sweeter, lighter confectionary and it was a fitting nightcap to an English tasting session I held with myself throughout New Years Eve cumulating with this fine Imp Stout. Would have preferred the head to be deeper and richer, but that is a small consideration compared to the overall enjoyment of such a flavoursome beer.

Bottle via eebria. Pitch black, thin brown head. Coffee, chocolate, molasses. Full body, thick mouthfeel, good carbonation. Sweet Demerara sugar and some liquorice. Long finish.

330ml bottle. Aroma is molasses, chocolate, stone fruit, smoke. Taste is quite similar. Dark chocolatey with some bitterness. Kind of thick and oily on the tongue and feels nicely put together. Not as superb as the Special Reserve but still a very good beer.

330ml bottle enjoyed @ home, thanks to Gary. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is raisins, plums, prunes, roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and molasses. Flavour is sweet and light bitter. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation. Finish is a little too sweet and warming alcohol.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours black with a nice thick layer of beige foam. Really nice sweet mocha aroma. The taste starts with a little spice before coffee and bitter dark chocolate. A little black fruit and leather in there too. Nice creamy mouthfeel with light carbonation. Delicious.

330ml bottle. Lot No. 876. Pours black in colour with a light brown foam head. Nose of roasted malt, chocolate & coffee. Sweetish roast malt flavour with molasses, dark fruits, chocolate powder, coffee and some bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, fine carbonation, boozy roast bitter finish. Very drinkable.

2/20/15. Sampled during RBWG 2015. Very happy to see this as I had sampled the Special Reserve before but not this one! Black pour with a nice tan head, good lacing. Rich aroma, ashy, coffee, biscuits, some dark fruits mixed in. Great flavor, ashy, chocolate, coffee, char, dark fruits, caramel, biscuits. Tasty!

11.2 oz brown bottle; Lot #721; BB dated 11-2015. Pours dark brown, looking black in the snifter. The light brown head has somewhat weak retention. This has a full mouthfeel, but not as thick or even syrupy as I expected after watching the pour. The rich aroma carries hints of dark fruits and faint (for ABV) alcohol esters. The flavor is also rich and complex, but a touch too sweet until the aftertaste. More chocolate than fruit in the flavor.
