4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask (gravity) - Norwich Beer Festival 2011. Rating #1200. Poured a thick and sticky looking, glass coating black with a fine but lasting creamy orange-tinged light brown head that left a fair lace. Really rich & intense. Dried, spicy fruits - raisin & prune - some smokiness, hints of roast and some late developing alcohol at the back on the nose. Vanilla, roasted malt, strong coffee accompany much of the aroma characteristics on the tongue. Thick & chewy on the tongue; creamy, soft & smooth mouthfeel. Medium length bitterness, warming finish, lingering spiciness.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
275ml bottle (ChrisO’s pre-GBBF2011 "Donkey Dork Lord" shindig)
Sweet roasty aroma. Dark and viscous, tiny tight head. Very sticky in the mouth, coats the palate. Very sweet too. Doesn’t make you feel refreshed when swallowing, makes me want to grab a crisp Dunkertons cider to drink. However, you can’t fault it for being nice and roasty. Probably this stands out in contrast to the earlier US porters (Xantus, for example) which were nearly as strong, but didn’t have the sweet stickiness problem. Without those to compare to, I would probably have given this a higher score.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig ’11. It pours opaque black, with a thick foamy beige head and low carbonation. The nose is charcoal, dark cherry, smoke and roasted malt. The taste is charcoal, chocolate, coffee, liquorice, dark cherry, nut, currant, fig, prune and alcohol warmth, with a sweet, nutty finish. A very flavoursome and tasty Imperial Stout.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAR 13, 2011 Bottle:
Very nice vast brown foamy head on top of a pitch black beer.
Smell coffee, wood, roasted malts, dark chocolate, toffee and hints of something oatmeal, creamy (coffee milk) and a bit dusty.
Taste is a very good mix of coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, bitter, warmth (alcohol), hints of butter, liquorice, smoke, lactose, spices and grass.
Full bitter coffee chocolate roasted malts and light grassy aftertaste.
Soft silky viscous mouthfeel, full body and low carbo.
Interesting beer for sure, but the opposite qua taste with most other beers: taste is better in the beginning than when it has been in a glass for a longer while. So the 4.5 given is for the moment of opening and tasting directly (fresh?) otherwise the point given would be closer to a 4.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
5th February 2011
Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival. Opaque black - brown beer. Residual tan head. Low carbonation. Rich dark malt but quite a light touch of it. Dark chocolate with a trace of coffee. Well balanced tangy dark fruits underneath. Finishes sweeter with a neutral palate. Pretty nice - easy to see why this makes a great base for the Special Reserve!
