Douberd (2593) - Arnhem, NETHERLANDS - APR 18, 2014
275 ml bottle labeled as Redshank Barley Wine. At home, poured into the Borefts taster, ABV 7.5% Deep and dark red brown colour, with one finger of thick head, tan in colour, with good retention, leaving light lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruits, plums mainly, sugars, light caramel, raisins, light alcohol. Tastes sweet with again plenty of dark fruits, sugar and molasses, no tracce of the alcohol now, well maybe a bit on the finish, more raisins and plum, some malts. Light but long lasting bitterness on the aftetaste. Medium body, quite carbonated. Overall a very good barley wine, maybe a bit low on the alcohol.

27.5cl bottle courtesy of markwise, thanks Mark. It pours with a murky amber body that supported a two minute long tan head. The aroma offers up malts, a dash of biscuit malts to slightly roasted malts and then it heads into firm levels of brown sugar, plums raisins and a bit of booze at the end of the draw. The taste begins in a similar fashion with some smooth sweet malts lined with a malt sweetened mild roastiness. The brown sugar note quickly kicks in along with plums and raisins and a slight boozy roughness. In the background there seems to be a little molasses to sort of fruit cake notes. Decent old school barleywine.

Bottle thanks to Casey. From a 2005 bottle. Pours a reddish dark brown. Lots of prunes sweet malt and chocolate in the nose. Lots of dark fruits in the flavor. Mildly carbonated. Very nice beer.

Bottle into bowl shaped glass. Very dark, with a creamy head. Malty, light roast aroma, smells good. Smooth, dry, with good body. Light roast malt. Good but lacks the depth of the likes of Gulden Draak.

Bottle from the brewery. Poured a clear dark brown with a broken off white head. The aroma is rich and surprisingly alcoholic leading to a strong bitter flavour with a malt alcohol liqourice palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Could do with just a little more alcohol I feel. It needs to burn a little more than it does.

Purchased a couple of weeks ago from brewery. Ratebeer describes it as an ’old ale’ but it describes itself as a ’barley wine’. Drunk on a horrible rainy night. Pours a fairly boring dark brown/black with very little head. Not looking that inspiring! Smell is pungent caramel, toffee, old ale, ’raisin’, maybe some raspberry/strawberry in the background. Body is light to medium, a little foamy. Taste - plenty of toffee, raisin, spice. It’s very similar to the Founders Dirty Bastard that I’ve just finished, but the body is slightly inferior so it loses a mark for that.
