It pours hazy black with a nice thick brown tinted head. A good amount of lacing too. There’s a bit of bitterness to the nose with hints of coffee and a bit of fruitiness. The flavor has few surprises from that, and is dominated by a fairly full on chocolate flavor.

Draft at brewery, summer 2011: Roasty with some char and tar. A tad too sweet and a little cloying. Lots of toffee, creamed coffee and milk chocolate. Piney-grassy bitterness. Hints of fruit and flower petals in the background. Solid stout, but again, a bit too sweet for me.

Tasting at Papsø’s
Black color. The aroma is not fully convincing, because along with some roasted malt there is some cream and cardboard; not bad, but cheap. The dark malts and dark caramel flavor is quite good; there is some dark chocolate and a spicy and peppery touch, with correct bitterness and zesty finish.
Quite good.

Tap at Iron Horse Taproom in DC. Diminishing deep brown mocha head on deep sepia to black. Salty green olive nose with puppy breath oddities. Taste is tangy, salty, briny green olive. Big pimento. Medium lace. Slightly bitten chocolate palate with drying character. Super bitter cocoa finish. Not bad. Not worth $10 a snifter pour though.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Elwood. Pours a pitch black with a tiny beige head. Sweet, roasty nose, a little raisin. Rich body, sweet licoricey roast and a little vanilla. Subdued bitterness but again quite some. Very pleasant and easygoing. 160612
