After the success of last year’s "Stone of Destiny", we asked ourselves, "how can we do this beer with a different barrel and still be true to our scottish roots?" We did some research and discovered that Captain Kidd notorious(alleged)priate, was indeed Scottish! In addition, legend has it that his treasure is buried off the coast of Connecticut among the Thimble Islands! With this knowledge, we decided on a little pirate influence for this year’s "Stone of Destiny." What says pirates better than rum? We contacted our friends at Thomas Tew distilling in Newport, RI, and they supplied us with some rum barrels in which we aged our imperial black and tan. The beer which emerged is rich, dark, and decadent. The beer is imminently drinkable with an amazing aroma. Coffee, chocolate, and rum notes are all presentand work together to produce a unique brew which we know you will savor....arrghh!! Sein Metu (without fear).

Last years was much better. I even thought to cellar this one for awhile to see if it would evolve into something interesting. Not so, too bad but I think this brewer does one thing well, at least they’re trying something new.

Sweet, dry, phenolic. Not a particularly exciting beer. Last year’s batch was better.

The bottle says it is the 2012 version, which is aged in Thomas Tew Rum barrels. The aroma is rum, chocolate, molasses, licorice, toffee. Very nice. The appearance is black, with a little translucence and a reddish hue. Light tan colored head. The flavor is rum (more than the aroma implies), some chocolate, licorice. The finish is rum, boozy, sweet. Medium in body, slightly thicker than medium, but thin for the style. Really enjoyable beverage. Not sure if 2012 should be a new beer or not.
