Collaboration with Ivory Tower Brewery.

A collaboration for education. Brewed from rye grown and malted in NC and local wildflower honey, Bee Student was brewed with the assistance and input of student in Appalachian State University’s Department of Fermentation Sciences as a practical lesson in professional brewing. We named it Bee Student, but this is an "A" beer.

Best before 07/14. This was odd, but it grew on me as I drank more. Definite mead-like qualities up front, and some dry, hoppy notes in the finish. Nice use of honey - not too sweet or boozy. I’d get this again...

22 oz. bottle via NC trade. Thanks, John! Bottle starts to foam slowly out of the neck upon popping the cap. Pours a cloudy pale gold with a big, fizzy barely off-white head. Lots of florals in this one, with rye spice, honey, some bready, doughy funk, grass, and some phenols. Light-bodied, with medium-to-high carbonation and a dry, bitter mouthfeel. Seems like something went a little wrong here. Not terrible, but I wouldn’t reach for it again.

Bomber. Nothing special. Golden yellow. Clear. A bit sweeter and a weird aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Bestway, Greensboro. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of spicy rye, earth, honey, pale malts. The taste is earth, honey, pale malts, spicy rye finish. Medium bodied, well balanced, crisp. Nice beer.

bomber from Bruisin’. Pours a barely hazy gold with a small head. Honey is apparent in the aroma but not overpowering and not too sweet. There is a lightly spicy note underneath the malt and honey. Flavor is balanced, decent honey presence, dryish malts. There are some metallic twinges here and there. I like that they didn’t overkill the honey but it’s still the centerpiece of the beer. It was okay.

Draft from Tyler’s in Durham. Pours a bright honey gold, clear and with a small head. Rye definitely present, as well as what seems to be a Saaz hop profile. Honey sweetness, but not overkill... thought it does become a bit too much after awhile. Interesting beer, though.

Bottle from beer study. Pours yellow with a quarter inch of white foam. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass Some honey notes on the nose. Has a but of slickness on the tongue. Definitely get the rye as well. Finishes fairly clean. Honey and rye is odd to me but this is still quaffable.

22 oz bottle served in a snifter A rather vigorous pour only roused a small head, but decent retention and lacing nonetheless. Aroma: mild, bready malts; lightly fruity with a touch of hops and a hint of honey. Taste: less sweet, more bitter and more hoppy than expected. Only mildly bitter but has the hop level of a typical pilsner. Spicy rye shows. Nice sweet malts and honey in the mix too. Medium body; quite dry and moderately crisp. O: a pleasant and somewhat distinctive brew that’s less sweet than might be expected.

Smooth, malt aroma with a golden pour, mild honey taste and a small warming aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
