Black Raven is a black IPA, aka Cascadian Dark Ale. Roasted malts give this beer its dark color & rich flavor. But make no mistake, this is still an IPA, with a massive amount of hops selected to balance the roasted malt character & add bitterness & flavor. Available on draft and for a limited time only.

Bottle split with Bobby at Weinhaus, Ashville, 17/02/15. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a big old light tan covering. Nose is pine, roast malt, spice, light tropical fruit notes. Taste comprises pine needle, light charr, biscuit, spice, grapefruit, earthy hops. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok CDA.

Location: Draft at Amos Howard, 1/4/15

Aroma: It has a light roasted malt and light hop aroma, feels a hint dull, but not bad.
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a creamy head on top.
Flavor: It has a clean, balanced flavor, with a light roast, and a light bitterness as well.
Palate: This one feels a touch thin, pretty easy drinking, with a light dry finish.
Overall Impression: This is an alright Black IPA, not a favorite of mine, but something I didn’t dislike either.

My Bottom Line:
Toasted malts and resinous hops combine in this balanced Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam protects the mahogany-hued brown.
-Earthy angles appear from the malt-hop combination.
-Drinkability is rather high.
-The flavor profile is not intense for the style, which I appreciate.

On tap at the Olde Hickory Station.

A dark brown ipa with a thin mocha head. In aroma, bitter chocolate malt with herbaceous character, floral hops, resinous, strange. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with good floral hops, resinous, grapefruit pulp, nice and smooth. On tap at Olde Hickory Station.

Bottle. Black pour with a khaki head. Grassy and piney hop aromas abound. Flavor is bone dry overly hopped stout. Take this review with a grain of salt I don’t care for black ipas. This just comes across as an unbalanced stout to me.

From a bomber. Pours black and opaque with a decent sized khaki head. Nice roasted malt aroma- smoky, chocolate, earth, coffee. Taste is the same and it drinks like it means it. Mouthfeel is pretty slick and full- almost drinks more like a stout but tons of hops pretty much negate that feeling quickly. Nice bitterness to it. Like a happy marriage of stouts and IPA’s. Easy to sip on- could be a summer or winter beer. Clever.

Draft - Grapefruit hops with no roast. Jet black with a rich beige head. Big overpowering bitterness, grapefruit and roast. Much too bitter.

Flight at Sunny Point. Black with red. A blotchy beige head. I smell earth with rich malts andspicy hops. Oniony hops, dammit. I don’t like oniony hops. I am pretty much gone after noting the hops. My loss.

On tap. Pours a near clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of earthy grass and dark grains as well as a pine bitterness. Flavor has more pine and resin with a creamy dark grain backing.
