Black Raven is a black IPA, aka Cascadian Dark Ale. Roasted malts give this beer its dark color & rich flavor. But make no mistake, this is still an IPA, with a massive amount of hops selected to balance the roasted malt character & add bitterness & flavor. Available on draft and for a limited time only.

(22oz bomber best by Dec 11 thanks to Exiled) clearish deep brown with soapy edge bubbles. Nose of honey, funk, lactose, roasty, and grapefruit. Taste is roasty, bitter, grapefruit, and leans towards bitter rather than roasty or sweet. Oily body.

Dark black/brown cola colored pour with a very rapidly fading khaki head. Nice pine/citrus hop aroma over subtle malty notes. Coffee chocolate mocha flavor with a blast of hop bitterness. Medium bodied with medium-high tingly carbonation and moderate astringency. Very nice. One of my favorite Olde Hickory beers.

Bottle thanks to JCB, pours dark brownish black with creamy tan head. Aroma has the usual CDA notes, with lots of roast, coffee, toffee, some pine and grass in there, touch of chocolate as well. Taste is very smooth and balanced, leaning more towards the porter/stout side than the IPA side, which is fairly rare in this category in general. Nice roast, toffee, coffee and chocolate mixing fairly well, some hints of bitter pine and grass, finishing fairly bitter, some from the hops and some from the roast. Nice brew overall.

The appearance on this one was black with a beige head. The aroma contained some chocolate, coffee, lemons, and grapefruit. The citrus dominates the flavor more than the stout qualities so. Some orange and grapefruit and coffee in the background. Overall pretty good but I’m almost over the whole Black IPA fad.

Bottle from Shag at the Suttree Appreciation Day. Pours brown, with no head to speak of. Odd aroma - grape, coffee, and some burnt toast. Flavor is pretty straight forward Black IPA (I guess...) - coffee and burnt notes, then a decent hop bitterness.

Sample at a tasting at Suttree’s. Pours blackish brown with beige head. The aroma is molasses, maple syrup, strong fruity hoppiness, a little bit of grapefruit and keffir lime. The flavor is citric American hops, some charred wood, and a nice tannic bitterness. Straightforward but tasty.

Had this during the 2011 Shenandoah Throwdown. Pours a deep black with a thin beiged tan head. Coffee, roast, citrus hops. Chocolate and roast, chocolate, long grapefruit bitterness. Roast, chocolate and long bittern grapefruit on the finish.
