Black Raven is a black IPA, aka Cascadian Dark Ale. Roasted malts give this beer its dark color & rich flavor. But make no mistake, this is still an IPA, with a massive amount of hops selected to balance the roasted malt character & add bitterness & flavor. Available on draft and for a limited time only.

Pours a respectable black with a touch of ruby in it. Aroma is amazing... dark chocolate, some espresso and a touch of smoke rounds out the awesome nose. Somewhere though, there is a bit of sweet citrus playing in the nose. Clean flavor of citrus and pine followed by dark roasted malt and smokey cocoa. Overall, this was really pleasurable to drink.

on tap-pours a rich light brown head with dark ruby red color. Aroma is pine, roasty-dark malt. Taste is roasty dark malt-cocoa, then the resin/pine hops with some bite come through and remain through the finish.

Pours dark black with one finger of creamy tan head. Nose is nice and hoppy, resinous and citrusy with a mild chocolaty sweetness. Bitter chocolate in the flavor with a resinous hop character and citrus rind. Full bodied with a medium carbonation and medium bitterness.

Bomber from TJ’s, Carrboro. This is one of those black IPAs that help you understand why the style is divisive. Me, I like it. Pours nicely frothy, with a thick tan head atop an inky dark brown body (nice mouthfeel, prickly and smooth). Nose of almost exclusively floral hops promises dank deliciousness. But the sharp roasted malts emerge strongly in the taste. For some reason I enjoyed the relative disjointedness of the beer, nose and taste going in such opposite directions, but I can see how others would appraise differently. Oops, almost forgot: Cascadian Dark Ale. Brootal!

On tap at Mac’s Speed Shop. Pours very dark brownish black with tan head. Aromas of pine, some citrus, some roast, and caramel. Flavors of piney hops, bit of citrus, some earthy notes along with some caramel. Nicely balanced black IPA.

Black pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is toasted malt and a light resin. Toasted malt and resiny hops on the flavor. Medium bodied with good carbonation.

651mL at Shenandoah Throwdown. Pour is a deep cola topped by a huge, dense coffee head with massive retention and giant lacing. Nose is fresh, black pepper, small roast, maple, and mild grapefruit hops. Taste is chalky, extremely nutty bitter, with tart lemon in the back. Metallic and biting on the palate at first giving way to an onslaught of nutty bitterness. Walnut and Brazil nut with earthy bitterness. Not bad.

Had this during the 2011 Shenandoah Throwdown. Pours a deep black with a thin beiged tan head. Coffee, roast, citrus hops. Chocolate and roast, chocolate, long grapefruit bitterness. Roast, chocolate and long bittern grapefruit on the finish.

Bottle thanks to JCB, pours dark brownish black with creamy tan head. Aroma has the usual CDA notes, with lots of roast, coffee, toffee, some pine and grass in there, touch of chocolate as well. Taste is very smooth and balanced, leaning more towards the porter/stout side than the IPA side, which is fairly rare in this category in general. Nice roast, toffee, coffee and chocolate mixing fairly well, some hints of bitter pine and grass, finishing fairly bitter, some from the hops and some from the roast. Nice brew overall.

Bomber from Bestway. A nice black IPA that focuses a little more on the black than the IPA. Some decent body and roasty malt presence. The hop profile is grassy with a faint hint of citrus towards the end of the sip. Nicely effervescent. Rich.
