3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Black colored pour with a tan head on it. Smell is hoppy, malty, and has a fair amount of roasted chocolate in the nose. Taste sweet and hoppy, smooth and easy to drink. Refreshing to a certain degree...followed it up with a Stone Sublimely - no comparison.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Not much on the nose, but what is there smells very good. It doesn't look so great either. Dark brown and cloudy. But who cares? I didn't by this to look at and sniff. It tastes very good. Hoppy with a bunch of chocolate. Really good interpretation of cascadian dark.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from TJís shared by Ethan. Nose of light roast, cocoa, resinous hops. Not much flavor, very blah. Mouthfeel is creamy at first, but finishes chalky and bitter. Light astringency.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sample at a tasting at Suttreeís. Pours blackish brown with beige head. The aroma is molasses, maple syrup, strong fruity hoppiness, a little bit of grapefruit and keffir lime. The flavor is citric American hops, some charred wood, and a nice tannic bitterness. Straightforward but tasty.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a medium-small, beige head.
Smell: A sharp snap of heady roast of lackluster, burnt coffee, dogged by notes of prune skins, resins, chimney soot.
Taste: An expected opening of roasty tasting roasted malts, but with some accompanying ashy char character. Dovetails into the resiny, soapy, very faintly citrusy floral hops adding its bitterness to the grainy astringency. Dark fruits buried under the roast and hops. A little alcohol showing. Roasty, bitterish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: A bit crude and rough around the edges. Though Iíve liked the bulk of Olde Hickory brews Iíve tried this was not one of them.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured into a newly acquired Old Hickory pint glass. Enjoy before September 2011, so this is a fresh one.
4.5 A: Pours black. Two fingers of creamy tan head with very good retention and tons of lacing.
4.0 S: Smells more like a hoppy porter than a black IPA. Anyway, this starts out with a light roasty burntness then the hops kick in and add citrusy and earthy components. Subtle chocolate notes worth well with the citrus giving the impression of orange flavored chocolate. Not bad.
3.5 T: Like every other black IPA Iíve had, the flavors compete instead of complement. Good bit of roastiness to start again with a light burntness. Subtle chocolate and caramel notes. Hops are strengthy and contribute citrus with emphasis on orange. Slightly more than moderate bitterness. Roasty aftertaste. Alcohol is well hidden.
3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. A bit lighter in body than Iíd like. Could also be creamier.
3.5 D: Not bad for the style (which is one I canít get into). Iím not sure if Iíll ever love drinking a black IPA, but Iím not going to give up just yet. There has to be some combination out there that will please me.
