COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of the First Olde Hickory Pro Am competition. Very limited production. Our brew master says: 71lbs of high alpha hops were used to make this limited production beer of only 13 barrels. Thatís just over 20 grams of hops used for each pint! DBH was brewed with 2 row barley, Carapils and Crisp Crystal 45 malts and fermented to 7% alc/vol. DBH was hopped with 5 different West Coast hops: Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial and Cascade. Additionally, DBH was twice dry hopped with different combinations of these hops. The net result is an amazing aroma of ripe juicy fruit mixed in with a bouquet of spring flowers. DBH was brewed to a level of bitterness of 108 IBUís, and leaves a lingering bitterness; it is, after all, a Double IPA!

Strong floral aroma. Citrus flavor that lingers on the tongue for quite some time. This beer would be perfect if it were a bit clearer.

22oz bottle, shared by Jay. Bottle suggests that we enjoy this before November 2012. Thin off-white head. little lace. Clear amber color. Very interesting spicy hop aroma. What is this Iím tasting? Thyme? Basil? Big toasty malts, after the herbacious hops. Big bitter taste, with a spicy bite. Very dry finish, light smooth carbonation. Interesting IPA, I give it credit for having such an unusually herbacious hop profile. But itís a lot less fruity than the description might suggest, I canít really get any fruit taste out of it. Just a good, pleasant spice. Reminds me of the Saison Du Buff.

Bottle shared by Lunch. Thanks Paul. This brew appears hazy and orange with a thin white head. The aroma is hop forward and initially smells enticing. However, lurking behind the hop scents is an odd, vegetal smell. The flavor is just wrong and harsh. Weird, off-putting, sulfur and earth flavors overrun any potential pleasant tastes I was hoping to find. Not a good beer. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-30-2011

Bittersweet chocolate truffle nose. They claim itís floral, but I just donít smell it. Medium-light body. More bittersweet chocolate in the middle with some citrus resins in the back. Leaves a lot of sugar on the lips. Very complex, so much going on. Although it has an alcohol and resin aftertaste, which I usually donít care for, I keep going back for that crazy bittersweet chocolate.

Raft at the source. Hazy golden color, white edge head. Arima of scallions, grass, lemon. Taste of lemongrass, bitter pine.

bomber purchased at Tasty Beverage in Raleigh. pours a deep orange with a nice 1+ finger white head. Nov 2012 expiration date. Iím not picking up on the dry hopping aromas. caramel/crystal malts circulate with citrus aromas. med to full body with a well balanced load of malts and hops. citrus bitterness flows through with a bright sticky assertive finish. somewhat sweet but also drying. nice beer.

Wow. Theyíre not kidding with the name. Dark golden pour with a moderate white head. Extremely hoppy flavor that tastes clean. Biting finish that is not for the uninitiated.

24 karat gold pour with a small white head. Aroma is loaded with grapefruit peel, resin, grassy notes. Very resinous flavor, quite bitter but the malt offers enough balance. This is a great brew and seems under the radar. Nice!

Bottle exp. date 8/2012. Appearance: nice clear orange/amber color with finger off white head quickly dissipating. Aroma: pine, mango, grapefruit, strong sugary sweet aroma, really nice and slightly "different". Taste: POW! Bitter hops from start to finish...touch of floral and grapefruit notes right at the beginning and then just a tongue scraper; no indication of malt that I can pull out. Mouthfeel: light to medium body with medium carbonation which I canít fully distinguish between the carbonation and bitter "stabbing" on the tongue. Overall: I really wanted to love this beer because I grew up in Hickory, NC way before these guys were around (and before I was old enough to drink!). In my relatively new quest/obsession with craft beer, this one really helps me understand the importance of balance between malt and hops. No balance here whatsoever. I really do enjoy the bitterness a lot, but actually would like a touch more balance on the malts. Great learning experience!
