COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is STOUT beer, not for the meek! Hickory Stick Stout is a whole- lot-a beer full of malt. English pale and crystal malts start this beer quickly followed by big time chocolate and black patent malts. Tons of Cascade hops go into Hickory Stick Stout to round out the malt character. Hickory Stick Stout is a very robust stout, bursting with flavor!

Originally reviewed: 1/26/10. Bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a very deep black with a thin cola-like head on top. This pops and fizzles away to nothing pretty quick. Leaves some really pretty sip rings and sticky globs on the glass though. Scents of mild roasted coffee, burnt matches, and grassy hops. I like that hop scent in a big dark beer! The body is creamy and smooth with a bit of heaviness to it. Lightly drying finish. Great woodsy flavors in this beer. Like others have said, I’m not sure if Hickory was used in the making of this, but it does carry a wood-like flavor with it. Good black coffee flavors meld to a semi-sweet chocolate finish. Some bittering hops are noted as well. This is good, well-hopped Stout that I would not mind having again and again. So glad this is around the area now. Kudos, Olde Hickory!

Beautiful deep brown pour with two fingers of tan, creamy head. Huge hit of chocolate on the nose followed by licorice, vanilla, and roasted grains. Taste not what you’d expect, a lot stronger on the hops than most stouts. Dark chocolate, smokiness, and a big piney hop finish. Hop bitterness lingers for a long time. Really unique stout.

22 oz. bottle from John Owens. Pours a dark cola brown with a small off white head. The aroma has roasted malts, dark chocolate, earthy, with some bark. The flavor has the same; roasted malts, bark, dark chocolate and earthy. A bit thin, but not too bad.

Bomber to snifter (thanks alexsdad06). Looks solid; A dark cola with thin light beige lacing. Smells solid too; hickory and malt. Tastes like it smells with the oil of the hickory giving the illusion of spice. Average on the palate. Solid beer.

Clear very dark brown amber with a foamy head and horizontal streaks of lace. The aroma leads in nicely: solid roasted malt going in that reveals a lot of bitter chocolate (and a little coffee) through the palate to the finish. At the last, the taste is very much like Baker’s semi-sweet chocolate squares. A good late night sipper.

Bomber to snifter. I hope my glass is contaminated because something is way off in the aroma. Dark brown stout. Dark roast albeit thin flavor. Had to pour it.

Bomber from timfoolery. It’s a wild pour. One inch of dark brown and 4+ fingers of creamy/foamy tan head. Aroma through that head is tuff, but there’s a lot of heavy dark burnt malt down below. Med body or better. Flavor is fairly smooth burnt malt with some aspects that could be bourbon or celery. Odd, but I could call it either way. There’s some chocolate, and it’s rather ashy, but it’s dry, seemingly astringent, and there’s a lot of hop bitter. Pardon while I attend to the foam creeping from the bottle. Damn nice drink. Much more flavor than many stouts. As flavorful as an IS, but in a very different, but similar, way.

22oz Bottle. The pour was a very dark brown with a large (2-3 finger) light brown frothy head that had great retention, slowly reducing to a thick cap which lasted throughout and had good streaky lacing. The aroma was of a burnt bread malt, light resin hops and a bold leathery yeast with notes of bakers’ chocolate, roasted coffee and a charred smoky scent. The taste was bitter, malty and rather roasty with a strong bitter chocolate note from the beginning, progressing with a strong hoppiness, a bitter coffee presence and a bold charred taste towards the end. The flavor lasted a very long time after the swallow, with a mild charred hoppy taste hitting you right in the back of the throat and lingering for just a little while longer. Mouthfeel was medium in body and dry in texture with a quite lively carbonation. Overall this was a bold and roasty Stout with a smoky charred finish and a good smooth drinkability...

Bomber. Pours near black. Not much of any head, but mild lacing. Taste is a very nice balance of smoky malts, sweetness, and a dry finish.

Poured from bottle. Lots in the aroma - dry cocoa, toasted malt, smoke, caramel. Good lookin stout with tan lasting head. Dry cocoa, wood, licorice, nut with hops in the back. Licorice, caramel and smoky notes too. Generally dry feel, but some sweetness as well. Quite enjoyable.

Bottle:   Black, thin to moderate foamy sandy head, nice lacing.   Bakers chocolate and soft roasted malts on the nose.   Very dry bakers chocolate and soft roasted malts on the tongue.   Not bitter, not too sweet, very dry, with a roasted malt background.   Body and mouthfeel are fairly moderate.   Not too big in body, somewhat thin but not watery.   Very simple finish, soft roast with some bakers chocolate, mild bitterness, dry.   Tiz okay, but fairly average.   Thanks Jeff!
