3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from timfoolery. Itís a wild pour. One inch of dark brown and 4+ fingers of creamy/foamy tan head. Aroma through that head is tuff, but thereís a lot of heavy dark burnt malt down below. Med body or better. Flavor is fairly smooth burnt malt with some aspects that could be bourbon or celery. Odd, but I could call it either way. Thereís some chocolate, and itís rather ashy, but itís dry, seemingly astringent, and thereís a lot of hop bitter. Pardon while I attend to the foam creeping from the bottle. Damn nice drink. Much more flavor than many stouts. As flavorful as an IS, but in a very different, but similar, way.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
The color is dark brown that is fairly clear when held to the light. It has a tan head. It has aromas of chocolate, roasted malts, some burnt smells, and low fruit aroma most like dark fruits. The flavors are roasted malts with chocolate compliments. There are some burnt flavors that are moderate. The fruit flavors are low and dark. It has a medium feel with slightly above moderate carbonation.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Black chestnut. Stable khaki head. Tarry, inky aromas prevail over black licorice, espresso, chocolate truffles and grapefruit. Soft, plentiful carbonation. Caramel-rich and forcefully roasty, up front, with big citric hop bitterness cutting through the sugars and aligning with pronounced black patent astringency. Smoky, tarry notes are buried within the expressive maltiness. Prevalent notes of char supply noticeable acidity and some rough edges to the otherwise rich and multilayered malt, though a pleasant fudgelike, inky richness does persist. Stacks of burnt toffee, ash and espresso comprise the intensely roasty, smoky finish. A hopcentric stout a la Avery Out of Bounds. Just as Crystal malt serves as the base of Averyís rendition, Olde Hickory hasnít been shy with the Crystal, and itís similarly heavy handed with the roast and hops. A bit ashy and astringent for me to throw back quickly, but itís complex and virtually flawless. Nice effort.

22 ounce bottle. Pours almost black with a nice tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and a bit of smoke. Pleasant, but nothing too exciting for me.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line:
Vanilla and dark fruit plunge into an ashy, roasty finish in this slender Stout.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the blackness.
-The nose was promising, but that overly roasty ending decreased drinkability and enjoyment somewhat.
-Like all Olde Hickory brews Iíve had, this is flavorful throughout but lacks refinement, smoothness.
On tap at the Olde Hickory Station.
