Beautiful deep brown pour with two fingers of tan, creamy head. Huge hit of chocolate on the nose followed by licorice, vanilla, and roasted grains. Taste not what you’d expect, a lot stronger on the hops than most stouts. Dark chocolate, smokiness, and a big piney hop finish. Hop bitterness lingers for a long time. Really unique stout.

Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Mild coffee and chocolate flavor and a slightly more assertive roasted bean aroma. Picked up in Asheville in 2015.

22 ounce bottle. Pours almost black with a nice tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and a bit of smoke. Pleasant, but nothing too exciting for me.

Big bottle into stout glass. Huge thick tan head on top of black beer. Aroma of mud, leather and alcohol. Bitter chocolate and burnt coffee taste. Thin mouthfeel. Looks good but Disappointing.

Tap. Black with small head. Very malty. Dry slightly bitter finish. Solid, if unexceptional stout.

Black in the glass. Thin soapy head. Slight cocoa and nutty aroma. Dry on the palate. Cocoa flavor with a hint of dark coffee and roasted malt. Overall, a solid easy drinking brew.

My Bottom Line:
Vanilla and dark fruit plunge into an ashy, roasty finish in this slender Stout.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the blackness.
-The nose was promising, but that overly roasty ending decreased drinkability and enjoyment somewhat.
-Like all Olde Hickory brews I’ve had, this is flavorful throughout but lacks refinement, smoothness.

A dark brown stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, nice bitter chocolate with resinous floral hops, grapefruit, treacle, very nice. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate malt with coffee grind, musty character, floral hops, grapefruit pulp, hoppy stout. On tap at Olde Hickory Station.

BBD 12/14. Pours dark as a starless night with a massive World Class head, lacing and retention. Nice, but somewhat subtle, nose of sweet dark chocolate with only a hint of roast. Very light medium body with just a touch of creamy texture. Slightly above normal carbonation with some effervescence in the middle and finish. The flavor profile is intense, a bit complex and fairly balanced. It begins with a bitter rush of dark chocolate that fades into coffee notes. The sweet aspects of the nose are not present. In turn, the coffee releases into a mild bitter roast with citric, but not quite rind like, hop bitterness. The finish is somewhat dry and leaves you with a distinctive aftertaste of charred grain. Similar to Bell’s Kalamazoo, but a bit more refined.
