3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From notes. First reviewed 6/28/2011. Poured from a waxed 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.
Out of the bottle this is nearly black, with dark red edges as I tip the glass a bit. A pleasant coffee brown head forms and slowly fades, leaving a bit of nice lace.
Sweet roasted malt, a little coffee and vanilla, a lot of molasses, and some dark fruits.
Medium roasted malt lends to some coffee bitterness and molasses sweetness. Dark chocolate is dominant throughout, with vanilla being fairly prevalent throughout each sip as well. Unnamed dark fruits add a little complexity. A little bit sweet, but mostly bitter at the end.
Medium to full bodied, but a little watery for some reason. Medium carbonation and a little bit sticky.
I enjoyed this stout for its subtle flavors, but I did not find this distinguishable enough to merit an upper tier ranking.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears pitch black in the glass with a one finger beige head that quickly settles into a lasting ring.
Robust dark malt aroma with hints of dark chocolate, coffee bean, toast and oatmeal. The honey provides sweetness and there is a ton of sweet chocolate countering the roster notes. Subtle booze.
Chewy full body with a decent balance of deeply roasted dark malt and sweeter, boozy notes. Slight bitterness up front and slightly acrid with hints of roasted coffee bean, burnt toast, bitter dark chocolate and oatmeal. The honey provides fullness to the body and smooths things out mid-palate with some much needed sweetness. There’s also some milk chocolate and a lactic presence balancing things out. Toward the end of the palate there is some sweet booze with a decent amount of heat. Still, it’s pretty easy to drink at 10.6%.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On draught at the brewery. Pours opaque with a deep, thick chocolate head, leaving heaped rings of lace down the glass. The nose is of roasted caramel. Huge roasted bitter chocolates, coffee, smoke, caramel, light tannins and hints at esters/grapes to the tongue. The finish is a roasty bitter with a touch of alcohol warmth. Very complex and perfect for a cold winter night. A superb syrupy mouthfeel accompanies the oily palate. This is a very nice Impy Stout.

9 dec 2011, bottle. Amazing in every way! Smells and tastes like bourbon ages imp stout. Vanilla and oaky notes. Very sweet but dark chic stout is much bigger than in bourbon stouts. Lovely!

This one was a bitch to open. Pours black with a a solid darker brown head. Nose is intense malts sweet chocolate, booze, coffee. Flavor is a super bitter and boozy flavor with intense coffee and toasted flavors. Full body smooth thick feel. I enjoyed this one. Lots of flavor and not anything too over the top.

Light coffee....Unique... Not bad, just different... Medium body.... No trace of the alcohol. Overall.. can think of many other IMPY’s that I would rather have. Thanks Brad

On tap at Duckworths Ballantyne. Dark colored pour with a tan head on it. Smell is full of coffee and chocolate and a little bit of vanilla? Almost smells like a bourbon barrel beer. Sweet smooth taste that is very creamy and easy to drink. No 10.5% noticed here. A pretty good beer from NC - perhaps worth the large price tag on the bombers, but definitely worth the $3 draft price at Duckworths.
