4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Last of the 2012 purchased at Brawley’s in Charlotte NC. Pours rich deep black brown. Head is a rich milk chocolate froth of small bubbles that quickly disappears. Nose is restrained rich deep chocolate notes. Taste is sweet dark chocolate bitters with just a hint of honey sweetness. The rich dark chocolate flavor broadens on the finish. A staggeringly good beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
2013 bottle. It pours a thick, jet black color with a thin brown head. The aroma is rich and complex with notes of fudge, molasses and honey up front. Nice dense roasted, smoky malts underneath with hints of almonds and sherry that seem like mild oxidation, but it suits this beer well. The flavor is rich with dense, woody roasted malt. Sweet with honey and molasses, but the intense smoke and roast balance it out a bit. There’s some hints of floral/menthol bitterness in the finish along with more intense roast. The body is insanely thick and goes down slow. This is a sipper for sure, and feels much bigger than 10% although the alcohol isn’t that noticeable, just the flavors and mouthfeel are extremely intense. Some burnt malt in the aftertaste is the only mild turn off. Otherwise, a really intense, complex treat.

Bottle courtesy of Mike, shared with Paul and Dallas. Porus a deep blackish brown body with thin tan lacing. Mouthfeel is medium with notes of rich woody, earthy roast, bitter dark chocolate, dirt, oak and sweet honey. A bit reminiscient of Bell’s Expedition.

Bottle. Vintage, been in the cellar for a while. Pouts a dark inky brown with very minimal head. Low carbonation. Molasses and dark roast in the nose. Heavy mouthfeel, a bit oily. Sweet molasses upfront that then transitions to dark chocolate, roast, and a touch of leather. A bit sweet but pretty tasty.

Bottle (2013), thanks to jtclockwork. From notes, sampled side-by-side with Event Horizon. Pours like viscous motor oil. Aroma: tons of roast, stale hops. Honey hard to pick out. Taste: alcohol, spice/roast, big lasting coffee roast finish. Quite sweet, but then offset with huge bitter coffee finish. Full body, viscous and oily. Avg carbonation. I very much prefer the event horizon, but this be good too.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Gold wax bottle from Joe. Thanks bud. Pours pitch black with a toe finger brown head, looking super creamy, and with wicked retention. Sweet aroma of honey and roast, molasses and dark fruits, chocolate and smoke. Very dessert-like in the nose. Flavor is massive roast with serious bitterness, char, lots of sweet chocolate and dark fruit and molasses to balance. Big rich body with low to medium carbonation. I bet this would stand up nicely to bourbon barrels. Very nice, somewhat under the radar stout.
