Bottle from Jay. Pours dark/medium brown with tan foam. Smells rich and sweet of caramel, molasses, and a touch of anise. Tastes initially very different from the nose, very bitter and not terribly sweet, but as you wait, or introduce air, the sweetness comes through with raison, molasses and dark caremel.

650 ml. Hazy copper brown with a lasting film of cream. Nose is earthy toast, walnut, cocoa and caramel. Taste is caramel, chocolate, earthy oak, citrus and whiskey. Medium-heavy body is to the sweet side, shows a bit of warmth and has a medium-high carbonation that fits the brew. A bit boozy, but not overly so.

Bottle from Timfoolery. Pours dark brown with an orange tan head. Aroma is heavy brown sugar with some distinctive med dark fruit. Near full bodied. Flavor is sort of woody, treacle with hints of fig and raisin. Pretty tasty.

2013 bottle at home. Pours fairly clear tawny to brown with a small, large bubbled, frothy tan head, medium retention with spare lacing. Aroma is caramel, nutty and toast malt, vanilla, rum, light coconut, prunes and figs with peppery alcohol and spicy, earthy hops. Flavor is caramel and nutty malt forward, toast malt notes, dark candied fruits, light earthy and spicy hops, peppery alcohol, medium hop bitterness, balanced toward sweet malt, clean, and a sweet yet drying finish. Full body, medium carbonation, and light alcohol warming.

Pours a dark brown with a reddish hue. The head dissipates to only end up clinging to my glass. The aroma is of booze, sweet and roasted malt grains, dark fruit, and burnt candy like sugar. In tasting I noticed a weak bitterness, potent burnt syrup sugar like sweetness, raisin like fruit, a touch of carmel, and some spice. The finish is semi dry from the booze with sugary undertones and a short bitterness that appears but does not linger. Overall this a good but over done and complex barleywine.

Bottle. Hazy copper red color in the glass with a nice froth of tan foam. Good looking beer. Heavy raisin and plum in the aroma with thick sweet malt and some minor hop bitterness. Taste is dark fruit, plum, raisin, and dense sweet malt. Coating mouthfeel. Solid barley wine.

Taster at RBWG 2014 grand tasting - thanks to the person who shared this! Mostly clear dark red, slightly brown color. Minimal khaki head. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Tropical, red fruity flavors, light caramel malt, light spice. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter, tannic aromas. Good BA scotch ale.

Sampledvat rbwg. Opaque brown. I smell raisins and grain. This is American meets English barleywine. Raisins are tasyed and it has a pitted fruit thing going on. Big earth and malts. So much warming. Tasty stuff.
