4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
This was picked up at Triangle Wine in Southern Pines. The seal is Royal Blue, but the stamp on the bottle says 2013. It has a sweet aroma with a hint of raisin, figs, roasted malts. There is minimal head. It is a very dark brown with some clouding in the light. The taste definitely is warming with brown sugar, biscuit, roasted, raisin with a bit of sweetness to it. The alcohol taste is there, but not overpowering as with some other in this category. This is very good.

Full, but not heavy mouthfeel. Malty and oaky and sweet. Unusually dark for a barleywine. Outstanding!!! I would highly recommend even for people who have never tasted a barleywine before. This could be pleasant to most beer drinkers.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh).
Pours dark brown with a touch of head. Aroma carries a heavy malt component, which carries over int the taste. The flavors associated with barleywine don't seem to appear until the aftertaste.
I'm not a fan of barleywines, but this is drinkable in small doses. Won't be tailgating with this one.

22 ounce bottle waxed top, poured a reddish brown color with aromas of malt, caramel, sugar, light hops, and some molasses. Flavors are the same, mildly sweet up front with some molasses and light hops in the finish, nice beer overall.

8/31/2011: Olde Hickory Irish Walker Barley-Wine Style Ale... Aroma: Caramelized sugars with just a dollop of molasses and floral-citrus hops. Appearance: Brown color with reddish highlights; dark beige bubbles on the surface. Flavor: Caramelized malt and dark brown sugar; mild citrusy-floral bitterness in the middle; hints of roasty malts in the in middle followed by weak coffee candy, floral and earthy hops, and then some coffee grounds and a bit of yummy char. Palate: Average. Overall: Drinks a bit more like a mild American-style barleywine, but that’s okay... It’s still a GOOD beer! This beer has a unique flavor profile.

Mine was actually a 2012....Smooth and sweet but without much in the way of distinguishing flavors. Lots of carmel, sticky, not much in the way of hops. Finish is lingering. Good but nothing remarkable.

2011 vintage into a Founders 15’th glass. Really digging the wax job with the stamp on top of the cap.
A - Pours a very dark brown body. Look more like a stout than a barleywine. Two fingers of light mocha foam sticks around for a long time. Excellent lacing and retention.
S - Now I know why its so dark. Lots of roasted malts, char, and chocolate combined with the traditional toffee, brown sugar, and raisins. A bit of faded piney hops and some booze
T - Toffee, heavily roasted malts, brown sugar, molasses, raisins, and a metallic aftertaste alongside light oxidation. Its pretty tasty but rather lackluster. The mouth feel is great though, rich and creamy.
O - A very roasty barleywine with a lot of good attributes but none that shine too bright. The metallic aftertaste takes its toll and oxidation is starting to creep in. I’m happy to have tried it but it wasn’t exactly memorable.
