3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Beer Study. Cloudy opaque orange with a thin sticky white lace. Nose is grapefruit, sweet honeydew melon, light floral and herbal notes, some stickier resin, light onion/garlic, light toffee. Aroma was slightly offputting to me at first with a sharp resinous, faded hop, sweet buttery burst and sorta retains that character despite its complexity at it warms and open up. Oily, slick palate with lots of grapefruit and sweeter resinous orangey notes. A fair amount of the heat shows, along with a slightly spicy peppery, herbal note. A little thicker on the tongue than i prefer my iPa’s, single or double (or triple..). Maybe a little underattenuated as the sugars linger and weigh this beer down some. A little too much booze as well, but it definitely improved ( at least as far as my rating is concerned) throughout the hour I have been drinking this snifter. Tone down the alcohol and this could be really good.

Bottle @ Bobby’s, shared by Sam. Hazy orange pour with a white head. Orange, caramel, melon rind, and some grapefruit. A light pineapple note, too. Flavor is sweet malt and sugar. Nice fruit character of grapefruit, lemon, and pineapple. Mild bitterness of pine and grass.

22 oz. bottle via trade. Thanks again, John! Pours a cloudy but bright orange with a cm of cream-colored head that settles unevenly and leaves some lace streaks. Aroma of orange, grapefruit, pine, pineapple, caramel malts, florals, and a bit of tropical fruit. Flavor of pine, herbs, grapefruit, caramel malts, pineapple, papaya, florals, bubblegum, and a hint of peppery spice. Medium-bodied, with an alternating sweet and bitter mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. I can’t tell if this is generously called complex or less generously ’all over the place.’ Still, I enjoyed it.

22 ounce bottle poured orange, aromas of light citrus, aome pine and bitterness. Flavors followed suit, seemed a little old with a light stale hop flavor at the end.

On tap from Ridgewood (Raleigh)
Poured a cloudy amber with off-white head. Sweet and strong citrusy aroma. The citrus component of the taste is milder, with a touch of tartness.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from best way. Delicious on a hot summer day. Big orange and grapefruit citrus hop aromas. Those come through to the flavor pretty well. Big body and sweetness. Finish is grapefruit bitter and smooth. These guys do big beers well.

Bottle. The pour is a light bright orange. The aroma is strong hops and earthy tones. The taste is big hops up front. A little too bitter for me, but not bad overall.

Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. After the success of Death by Hops and Black Raven, I was a bit disappointed with this big boy. Hazy medium orange pour with sticky head and lacing. Predominant sweetness in the aroma to start, with some dry and citric notes emerging too. Slightly thick mouthfeel is a bit off for the style. Bubblegum and tropical fruits out of the blast cannon, dissipating first into excess sweetness and then a kind of indiscriminate bitterness. Weird, seems schizophrenic.
