3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 stumpyiliz (135) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 29, 2012Good bourbon and vanilla nose. Boozy front taste with light finish. Missing some meat to the body to accuate the Barrel aging. A great drinking beer that I would not paass up on draft or at the bottle store!!

Bottle. Thanks for sharing, daknole. Pours a clear caramel. Lovely boozy aroma with a ton of caramel malt and some coconut. Smooth caramel, vanilla, toffee, and light wood. Tastes like it has been sitting in the cellar for much longer than its actual age. Medium, mellow body.

Medium brown colored pour, light tannish head. Flavors of sweet bourbon, but not overly barreled here. Vanilla, toffee, sweet oaky flavors, malty grains, honey cheerios. Nice brew.

Hickory Hops 2013 - Pours murky walnut with a wispy head that reduces. The nose is sweet and of coconut. Flavors are similar, with cherry, malt, coconut and toffee. The tropical finish is just full-bodied and of rum alcohol wonderfulness! Really nice!!

Bottle from JCB. Thanks! Deep garnet pour with fomay tan head. Nose is sticky sweet bourbon and brown sugar with modest amounts of raisin-like dark fruit and vanilla. Flavor is gentle bourbon, light coconut and oak, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, faint vanilla, and at the end, a tinge of roasted malt. Lightly dry and roasty finish with a touch of nuttiness. Residual tangy dark fruit. Palate seems a bit on the thin side. Honestly, other than that, this is a solid brew.

Pours thick unclear dark chestnut amber with a darker tan head. Aroma brings some warming brown sugar and a tad of vanilla with the malts. Flavors bring caramel and sweet malts, muting the overbearing resin is the barrels so nicely without bringing any booze.

During RBWG 2013. Deep amber brown pour with a small tan head. Rich BA aroma with fudge, coconut, oak, etc. on top of a rich, somewhat sweet base - caramel, a wisp of char/smoke, and some dark fruits. Sweet BA flavor with wood, whiskey, fudge, on top of a somewhat sweet base already - caramel, etc. Not bad.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Drake (6488) - Ivy, Virginia, USA - APR 9, 2013
Bomber from Appalachian Vintner, Asheville. Pours a dark hazy bronze color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention. Big whisky aroma, booze, spicy wood, raisin and toffee. The taste is wood, raisin, whisky, toffee, booze, green apple, burnt sugar, toffee. Thin-medium bodied. Decent, but could use a lighter touch on the wood aging.

22 oz. bottle via STLHops trade. Thanks again, Jeremy! Best by February 2013. Oh well. I just got it this week. Pours a deep, hazy, almost muddy mahogany chestnut brown color with a small beige head that settles into a ring and a few spots. Aroma is barrel-forward; vanilla, oak, coconut, caramel, toasted chocolate, brown sugar, and smooth bourbon. Not much Scotch ale character in comparison to the barrel notes but it smells great. The flavor drops off a bit; quick bourbon barrel notes initially, with bourbon, oak, caramel, vanilla, and coconut, giving way to earth, leaves, and chocolate. The body has thinned; smooth and almost watery, with minimal carbonation. Some lingering booze but not much. Had the body held up better and flavor popped more, this would be awesome. As it stands, it’s still pretty damn good, mostly held up by the nose.

Charred oak and walnut nose. Clear chestnut, thin yellow head. Flavor is all whiskey. Medium body, slightly boozy but tolerable. Lacks character.
