The Event Horizon Imperial Stout is an incredibly rich and luxurious beer brewed with ten malts, local honey, and four American hop varietals before and extended aging in oak bourbon barrels. The result is a beer with many layers of complexity. As the name implies, with one sip you will be unable to turn back. This 2010 special release will age well for years to come, or enjoy now in good company. Cheers!

Black pour from 22oz bottle at home. Spicy and cocoa coffee flavor. Sweet and syrupy. Pretty good. A one glasser

Aroma of tequila which is a turn off. Maybe some oaky smells. Flavor is strong whiskey with a chocolatey finish. Hard to finish this glass

December 2014 bottle. Nicely sweet with excellent, moderate BB aging affects. Great balance. Moderate complexity. Exceptionally smooth. Well hidden alcohol. Overall: excellent

Bottle (date Dec. 2014) from de Bierkoning @ Beer Temple, shared with Abijn & MarcodL. Black color. Brown head. Aroma’s: sweet, bourbon, vanilla, light honey. Retronasal it’s moderate sweet, wood, vanilla, alcohol, bourbon. Flavor is moderate sweet with a light fruity sourness. Alcohol definitely feels stronger than 8.5%. Medium bodied. Long finish, but no new flavors.

Pours coffee brown with a thin but serviceable dark tan head. Aroma features dizzying roast malt, chocolate, coffee, molasses and caramel notes. Flavor drags you in with molasses, licorice, roast malt, coffee, woody and semi-sweet chocolate tones. Whoa, no surprise this is high gravity - ha ha ha! You’ll think you’re on the USS Cygnus! (Esoteric movie reference.) Thick, viscous mouthfeel has some good fizz. Go beyond the event horizon!

Bottle, courtesy of Potjebier, thanks! Black pour, almost no head. Delicious aroma of rich vanilla, mild honey, bourbon booze and creamy choco. Smooth flavor of vanilla, bourbon, subtle honey sweetness, cream, caramelised malt and a mildly stingy bourbon finish. This is the good stuff.

This review is of 2013 vintage Pours opaque black body, head is cappuccino colored and 1/5 of an inch. Head retention was average for barrel aged stout and lacing was above average. Smell is big on oak, whisky, fudge, caramel, and slight soy sauce. Charred malt balances out intense sweetness. Hops arent there but alcohol is definitely present. Taste is robust, extremely flavorful, with lots of alcohol but not harsh. This beer drinks more like 11 or 12% rather than 8.5. I would totally believe brewers if they said there was a heathy dose of chocolate in this beer, also getting coffee, but alas neither are used to produce The event horizon. Theres a slight bitterness as beer warms; vanilla, honey, oak, and bourbon reveal themselves as temperature rises. Mouthfeel is huge with this stout. Viscous, well carbonated, on the brink of chewy. Beer leaves a slightly oily coating on the tongue. If only the head retention was there, this would have been a perfect 5. Overall this beer is as great as it was when I first had it at Gabf in 2011. Intense malt, alcohol, char, and everything else you’d want in an imperial stout. The event horizon always has an open invitation in my fridge.

Rich full bodied with a chocolate coffee aroma with roast malt and vanilla. The flavor is similar with whiskey, vanilla and wood. Really long lasting finish.
