Jan 4, 2008 Murky unfiltered red and brown in color. Sharp, rough, thin and crusty on the tongue, harsh cracked grains and some cherry-flavored crystal malt. Medium hopped, in the vein of so-called imperial red ales, I imagine, but seems only around 5-6% ABV. Sweet fruit in the nose and a rough, husky malt body. Average.

Apr 17, 2008 Draft sample at brewpub. Poured hazy reddish amber color with a medium frothy off-white head that diminished slowly with fair lacing. Moderate sweet balanced aroma. Light to medium body with soft carbonation. Medium sweet toasted flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Average drinkable brew.

Jan 16, 2007 Pours a cloudy reddish amber color with a ring of offwhite lace on top. Interesting aroma and flavor of caramel and hops with a bitter finish. The body is light with an oily texture and moderate carbonation. Interesting beer.
Pailhead (2314), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
Dec 10, 2005 On tap: Aroma is citrusy with some light nuttiness. Mostly a transparent orange with a touch of haze and a small off-white head. Decent lacing. Citrusy and nutty up front with a light grapefruit hop finish. Somewhat IPA-ish in flavor.
Silphium (2009), Lansing, Michigan, USA
Sep 10, 2006 On tap at the brewpub/restaurant. Murky orange-brown body, medium off-white head. Cerealy, light aroma with hints of caramel. Served cold, which masks much of the flavor profile. Thankfully, as this beer warms, rich layers of caramel, Cheerios, dark fruits, and grassy, bitter hops develop. Light bitter finish. A pleasant beer in all respects.
