vyvvy (1756), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Sep 27, 2008 Updated: Oct 9, 2008Pours clear copper with lots of carbonation and a small tan head. The aroma is quite oxidized with some caramel malt with dry earthy hops. Medium / thin body with somewhat sharp carbonation. The taste has lots of oxidized cardboard, buttery diacetyl and not a whole lot else. Hopefully I can rerate this with a fresh bottle. (5/3/4/2/10 - 2.4) Got a fresh bottle and while I was hoping to bump up the score a lot, it will be minimal bumping. The aroma now has mushy caramel, biscuit malt, underlying spicy hops and a bit of diacetyl. Appearance and palate are about the same as the original notes. The taste has caramel / toffee like malt, spicy hops, some earthiness and some diacetyl. The finish is buttery and spicy. This is fair at best. Their #4 brown ale is significantly better. stefanje (598), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA Aug 29, 2008 650 ml bottle courtesy of dkachur. Pours a translucent copper color with medium white head that showed good lacing. The aroma was moderate in strength with dough, malted barley and apricots. The taste was hops forward with a fair biter hops kick, also present in the flavor was pine, caramel and brown sugar. The mouthfeel was full and malty. The finish was medium in duration and biter-sweet. Overall: A very enjoyable IPA, sometimes the bitterness comes across as a bit harsh, but strengths outweigh flaws. A recommended quaff. Thanks Dan. Great really.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium orange with an average, slightly off-white head that mostly diminished but left good lacing. The aroma was light to moderate caramel malt and heavy pine and citrus (mostly orange) hops The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet and bitter and lightly acidic with and average to long finish. There was caramel malt then orangey citrus hops with a little pine too. The medium body was sort of syrupy, yet oily too. But a better word overall would be juicy. It had fizzy carbonation with a very light astringent finish. shigadeyo (1399), Southwest Ohio Area, Ohio, USA Aug 17, 2008 8/17/2008: My wife took the first sip of Olde Richmond Batch No. 11 India Pale Ale and said that "it smells good" and tastes like citrus. A balanced aroma of brown sugar and toffee maltiness and lightly grassy and citrusy hops is a good start for this IPA. It has a shiny clear copper color, a moderate level of carbonation, and a frothy off-white head. There is a good level of sweet orange peel citrus hoppiness, a nice toffee maltiness, and a moderate level of bitterness. I really like the blend and balance of flavor, but the bitterness seems to be on the low side for an IPA. This beer has a nice medium-full body and a pleasing mouthfeel. More and more flavor and some additional bitterness come out as the beer warms. The hop flavor becomes more floral with a touch of orange and the maltiness presents as a lot of pale malt and strong like a Bock instead of being sugary. I think this is a very good, very sessionable IPA.
1 pint 6 fluid ounce bottle brought back from Virginia for me by my lovely wife. Thanks babe! Rating #72 for this beer...
mwelsh13 (195), Maryland, USA Aug 15, 2008 Grassy hop aroma matches the flavor. Soft hop bitterness for an IPA. Golden color with little head.
