3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 LoveCaissa (873) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - NOV 23, 2006
50 cl bottle. Hazy dark brown colour with a huge beige head. Fine aroma with chocolate and coffee. Flavour is very complex (chocolate, vanilla, prunes etc.) but unfortunately too sweet for me - probably due to the added cane sugar and Belgian sugar candy. Finish is dry, woody, and bitter.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 yngwie (8717) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - NOV 3, 2006
UPDATED: OCT 28, 2007 Bottle, 50 cl. Ruby, almost clear body, with a beige to tan head. Sweet aroma with dried fruits, some licorice and berries. Coffee, sugar, dried fruits and bitterness in the flavor, which finishes roasted, with some berries and some bitterness. Full body. Nice, but somewhat special. Maybe the year of cellaring changed it so much, maybe I was a bit drunk last time? Rating: 6-4-6-4-13-3.3. Old rating stands.
Bottled, 1.5ltr champagne bottle at Horsens Beerfestival. Deep brown, unclear beer with a big, beige head. Sweet nose with caramel and hops. The flavor is sweet too, with caramel, hops and some spice and yeast. Full-bodied beer with a sweet finish with some spicy notes. A nice celebration of Danske Ølentusiaster. (061028)
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 fiulijn (10000) - Como, ITALY - NOV 2, 2006
Dark brown color; huge creamy head. Malty aroma, sweet and spicy (cinnamon and nutmeg), with caramel; like the best Belgian ales. Good body structure; flavors of malt, caramel and liquorice in competition; woody. Good bitterness level, with a caramel-liquorice mix as well in the final. With some oxydation it becomes smoother.

So I do a trade with the esteemed Papsoe of Denmark and I go to the post office to collect the box. The lady behind the counter takes my ticket and disappears behind a door for a veeeery long time. When she finally emerges, rather than carrying a box she’s dragging a clear plastic bag containing what looks like soggy brown mush. My heart sinks. She slops the bag onto the counter and hands me a pen to sign for what’s clearly a disaster. I take the reeking bag home and find that thanks to brutish baggage handling and in spite of Henrik’s immaculate packing, there’s one broken bottle and this one has haemorrhaged a third of its contents through the swingtop somewhere between Denmark and Australia. Fuck. One gone and another almost certainly oxidised. So I’m about to chuck this in the trashcan with the shards of a Malheur 6 when I think, well, let’s have a taste just in case. And sweet mother of Christ, it’s perfect! If there’s a God, He likes good beer and wants us to be happy (but possibly not drink Malheur 6). And what a fine beer this is. It’s a dense teak colour and poured with a huge marshmallow head. The aroma is soft and sweet, with chocolate notes, cherry cake and pineapple. Couldn’t pick the 8% abv in the aroma. Lovely soft mouthfeel, medium bodied and creamy. Quite tart, with the alcohol prominent from the first sip. Sweet with chocolate, licorice root, port and clove. Quite spicy in the swallow. Some piney hops and a salty finish complete a very special beer. As others have noted, it doesn’t sit comfortably in the "dubbel" class - an old ale may be nearer the mark. Thanks, Henrik for another champion Danish brew. If you lads ever take to the longboats again, send us your brewers! (By the way, multilinguists may appreciate the irony of a beer called "Malhuer" or "Misfortune" breaking in transit... Ho ho.) (50cl bottle from trade. Best before Sep 1, 2007)
